Staff Sergeant Killed in Des Moines Plane Crash
Staff Sergeant Charles M. Keegan, 33, of Fort Des Moines, died Friday night when his privately owned plane crashed on the post Grill field and exploded. Iowa aero-nautics commissioner Charles Gatschet attributed the crash to mechanical failure and noted Keegan had training in forced landings. Keegan, flying on a student permit, burned in the cockpit before fire units could extinguish the blaze. A nearby farmer, Charles Pilmer, reported the motor was missing badly as the plane crossed the post stables and plunged into a field. Keegan had purchased the second hand plane last fall for about 150 dollars and was a licensed airplane motor mechanic. The obituary references a Lisbon earthquake statistic, unconnected to the incident.
