City Paving Main Topic of Aldermen
Muscatine city officials focused on the 1964 permanent street paving program including asphalt resurfacing of 14 blocks of downtown alleys during a two hour aldermanic finance committee meeting. Property owners objected to the assessment costs for one block of Main Street from Grand View avenue to Mill Street while John Hilton of the fourth ward urged paving Main Street only the block from Hershey avenue to Mill Street under a different plan. Hilton also proposed plans for permanent paving of about 45 miles of unimproved streets, about half within the city. City Engineer William McElwee said three two man surveying teams would cost about 2500 dollars a month, and would be needed most of the year.
