Cycle Rider Hurt Driver Without License Is Jailed

Emergency first aid was given to Douglas Verle Walton after a motorcycle and car collision at Spruce and West 5th in Muscatine. Walton, 25, was treated then released from Muscatine General Hospital. Driver William Cory, 48, was northbound on Spruce. damages were to the car’s rear and motorcycle front. Separately Orrin Sell, 48, jailed five days for driving without a license after a West Mississippi Drive crash damaging two parked Cadillacs. Others: Jean Volkens and Arthur Jones two-vehicle crash at 10th and Spring. Stiles Drug Co. parking lot collision damaging several cars including Clara Lang’s.

James T. Galloway, 27, pleads innocent in Davenport Municipal Court to the January 3 1964 holdup slaying of Harry Shannon Jr., 48. Judge Phillip Steffen orders no bond and marks June 7 for the preliminary hearing. Galloway, from Independence Missouri, was returned from Kansas City by Sheriff Strout. Tag Sellers Boost Funds for Weed Park Zoo

Plans for Zoo Day at Muscatine Weed Park outline tag sale by volunteers ages 8 to 80 to support Friends of the Weed Park Zoo. Tags sold downtown Friday night and Saturday and at the park Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Sellers earn 2 cents per tag. prizes of 10, 5, and 2.50 dollars awarded to top sellers. Highlights include a 1 to 2 p.m. concert by Mississippi Valley Country and Western Music Association, and 2 to 3:30 p.m. animal show by Al Stasz and troupe. Bear wrestling planned as a feature.

Schleinz to Head Eastern Division For Bandag Firm

Bandag Inc announces A F Schleinz of Muscatine as Eastern Division manager for a new 17 state region from Maine to Florida. Eight district managers will oversee about 80 Bandag dealers. Schleinz moves HQ to Muscatine after prior roles in rubber and tire sectors. Proceeds support local zoo facilities during a no charge program featuring Vic the Bruiser, Meeko the chimp, Denny the Great, and a clown.

Two Thefts Investigated in Local Crimes Report

Police are investigating two thefts reported in the past few days. A stereophonic Borg-Warner tape recorder and two speakers valued at about 60 dollars were taken from Mopco Co. warehouse, reported by Gary Weber. A tachometer valued at 60 dollars was stolen from a car on Oak Street in the 300 block, reported by Zenn Carpenter.

Brand Name Winners Named in Muscatine Journal Contest

Mrs. Janet E. Douglas won first prize a $100 merchandise certificate for the Brand Name Retailers contest. Second place went to Sister M. Rosewyn of St. Marys school faculty with a map on wallboard. Third went to Mrs. Margaret Freyermuth for a large poster sheet entry. Ten $10 and several $5 awards were also given. Taxpayers have one month to report to City Assessor Robert K. Birkhofer to sign for homestead and military exemptions.

Tickets for the 1967 Miss Muscatine Pageant went on sale today at five downtown locations and from Jaycee members and contestants. One ticket covers both pageant nights June 16 and 17. Preliminary judging of 13 contestants Friday.

Driver Hurt In Accident In County

Joseph Hayek aged 22 of Elmhurst Illinois was injured in a single car crash four miles south of Nicholson on U S 78 at about 1 55 pm on Wednesday. His heavily damaged car left the road struck a curb rolled over and returned to the roadway. He was taken to Columbus Junction for first aid and towing arrangements. Investigation ongoing.

Suspensions On Licenses Announced In Iowa

Iowa Department of Public Safety announces suspensions and revocations affecting Muscatine area residents. Wayne Meineke, 28, Grandview Ave, six months suspension for serious violation. John Hohenadel, 68, Park Ave, 110 days revoked for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Also, vandalism at S J Hoffman Ribstone Silo Co four miles south of Muscatine. one door and 24 windows broken. sheriff investigates. no items reported missing.

Driver Fined For Axel Overload In Muscatine County

Neal A. Foster appeared in 7th District Court before Judge R K Stohr and pleaded guilty to axle overload charges. He was fined 148.58 dollars plus 25 dollars costs after a May 16 weight at a state scales in Muscatine County showed the truck exceeded legal limits on axles two through five by 8 940 pounds. Foster waived counsel and expedited sentencing.

April Savings Bonds sales reach $91 857 in Muscatine County

Richard A. Shultz, Muscatine volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reports April sales of Series E and H United States bonds in Muscatine County total $91,857. The four month total is $394,426 toward 1967’s goal. He urges signups for the new Freedom Shares, noting the security went on sale May 1 and supports servicemen in Vietnam.
