Fires In New York Wreak Vast Loss And Death

In the 24 hours ending at eight this morning fires across New York and nearby areas caused more than a million dollars in damage. Twenty people died and fifteen were injured from a Christie Street tenement blaze sparked by a bomb in a grocery store. Steeplechase Park and other amusements at Long Beach and Coney Island were destroyed or damaged, with Luna Park and Dreamland also threatened. The steamship Hamilton arrived with part of its hold ablaze, amid a dramatic spectacle of flames and evacuations.

Hundreds Flee From Flames At Long Beach Hotel

Eight hundred guests at Long Beach Hotel fled for their lives when the seaside resort hotel burned early today. No lives were lost though one person is believed injured. The blaze caused about two hundred thousand dollars in losses including clothing and personal effects.

International prize court to have fifteen judges planned

The Hague July 29 Great Britain and Germany near agreement on a permanent prize court tribunal with 15 judges. The United States Japan and six European powers to provide one judge each south two from Latin America and five from other conference nations. Differences remain on operating laws.

President Roosevelt released a telegram from New York reader Emma Geldman Alexander Bockman and Hippolite Havel calling the verdict in the Haywood murder trial undesirable citizens victorious and urging rejoicing in Oyster Bay on July 29.

Last Sad Rites for A W Lee Held in Ottumwa

A. W. Lee president of the Lee syndicate of evening newspapers died in Nottingham England July 15. His body arrived in Ottumwa with family and friends and was taken to his home then to First Presbyterian Church for funeral services. Pallbearers included industry associates from Davenport Davenport and Ottumwa as the city observed the funeral with many civic and business leaders attending. The body then left for Cedar Rapids for vault interment.

Terrible heat kills live stock in Texas county

Detective George Wilson died from a abdomen wound after a shootout while attempting an arrest. Patrolman Richardson remains in critical condition. A large chase ended with the suspect surrounded in a cornfield seven miles east of the city. authorities doubt escape.
