George Crane a traveling salesman from Chicago died in Muscatine after a torpedo blast near Train No. 2 at the station. The injury proved fatal after a rapid decline following the explosion, with funeral plans set for Fairfield where relatives reside. Crane was 46.
New York report says Dr. Julian P. Thomas actress Miss Florence Haas and Miss Grace Rogers were seriously injured when their car struck a trolley pole at high speed. Thomas and Haas in critical condition. Rogers seriously hurt but likely to recover.
Michigan City Ind July 8 after a drunken carouse more than fifty Syrians and Turks fought in the Syrian settlement using knives clubs and stones. Several rioters were wounded two policemen were beaten and stabbed seriously. The police and fire department raided the area arresting fifteen or twenty rioters.
Oyster Bay July 8 A powerfully built young man from New Jersey tried to interview President Roosevelt at 4 am but was stopped by Secret Service. He claimed to have perfected a submarine boat and urged immediate attention as a battleship fleet was planned for the Pacific. He was taken home for care.
San Francisco July 8 Mayor Eugene Schmitz was convicted of extortion and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. The courtroom erupted in applause as Judge Dunne announced the penalty before a crowded chamber.
Mayor McClellan dismissed Wm Bellison from the office of corporation counsel today citing lack of full confidence in the counsel which the city’s interests demand. The move follows long standing political differences between McClellan and Bellison.
Chicago July 8 Attorneys for Standard Oil declined to submit further evidence in Landis led investigation. Landis announced sentence for the Indiana unit convicted of illegal railroad rates would be on August 3.
