Chicago July 8 The freight strike cuts movement to near halt with Illinois Central moving some freight. No violence reported as Two Roads secure men and unions plan sympathy strike. Central converts a freight house to a commissary. 500 handlers, mostly farmers, fed by Pullman waiters.
J A Mock a local barber died after a prolonged drinking binge. He had a history of hard drinking and had twice tried the Willow Bark cure. When whisky was unavailable he drank bay rum and fell into an unconscious sleep three weeks ago, never waking fully until death yesterday.
Lila Vanderbilt Sloan, granddaughter of W H Vanderbilt, married William Osgood Field in Lenox Massachusetts this morning before a distinguished company of New York millionaires and society people. The entire Vanderbilt family attended.
Seattle July 8 Posses chase Harry Tracy but lose trace as lower Sound coast is patrolled. The boat he escaped in Saturday is unfound and, in liberty for several days, Tracy is accused of three murders and terrorizing many.
The Syndicate Land company of Des Moines Iowa with a 1 million dollar capital filed articles of incorporation to develop millions of acres in Manitoba and Assiniboia. Colonists will pay for homes with money and labor as agents recruit emigrants across Iowa and western states. Incorporators are Alexander Mc Rae B C Bowman and William Wilkinson.
Minneapolis July 8 The National Educational Association opened with standard exercises. President Beardshear will deliver tonight's address while Nicholas Murray Butler and U S Education Commissioner Harris spoke at the Indian education session. The council authorized a committee to study school taxation methods. Beardshear remains ill.
Gideons elect officers for the next national convention held in Indianapolis after a contest with Minneapolis. Elected officers include President Frank A. Garlick Chicago, Vice President A D T Moore Cedar Rapids, Secretary John N Nicholson Janesville Wis, Treasurer W J Knights Janesville, and Chaplain L C Smith Oshkosh. Cedar Rapids July 8. The group also opposed trade in cigars and drinks and Sunday selling during the session.
Two Seggs boys aged 13 and 11 from a farmer family six miles west of Vienna were forced to work on the Fourth. They planned to run away with their 10-year-old cousin after stealing $60. Their mutilated bodies were found beside the railroad track two miles north of Perks after being run over by a Chicago and Eastern Illinois train. the cousin escaped.
Frank Cannon and Frank Case died in a boating accident on the Illinois River near Peoria after Case, who could swim, rocked the boat leading to its overturn. Cannon clung to Case as both men sank. their bodies were recovered about an hour later with Case still in Cannon's arms.
A Boston dispatch to the World reports Emilio Aguinaldo will depart Manila for San Francisco and then come to the United States. He will go to Boston to join former secretary Sixto Lopez and begin a lecture tour on Philippine conditions and a plea for independence.
Members of the M. W. A. lodge will hold their regular meeting this evening at Woodmen hall located at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Second Street.
The market notes corn futures at sixty six cents on the Chicago Board of Trade as prices touch the ninety cent mark.
Chicago July 8 The corn market on the board of trade rose from 84 to 85 4 cents amid a showdown between elevator shorts and Gates Harris engineers. By 11 am price touched 86 and later near 90 cents before closing around 87 with private settlements likely before week’s end. Gates holds contract corn and kiln dried stock, elevators seek favorable passable grade.
County Chairman J C Coster issues a call for the republican county convention at the court house July 26 to choose 16 delegates for the Des Moines state convention on July 30. The Muscatine county convention will have 164 delegates with no state office candidates from the county.
Market report from Chicago with H J Toher and Co brokers noting hog receipts 18 000 open strong close weak at advance mixed prices 7 25 to 8 20 cattle receipts 4 000 steady to slow sheep 12 000 worded with primary receipts and shipments for wheat corn oats and totals for storages and Liverpool and Northwest figures and day clearances for wheat and flour.
On a Sunday excursion steamer J S to Fort Madison a fight broke out on the deck as gamblers preyed on youth. Burlington men Sullivan Anderson and Chas Grothe warned players before a mob beat Anderson and Grothe, with Anderson near losing an eye and fleeing to the engine room.
A wagon owned by W. D. Goldsberry was struck by a freight car while a switch engine backed onto a siding opposite Seiler Bros. The front wheel and tongue were broken and the wagon strained, but no one was hurt and the horses escaped injury. Hubbard was unloading lime at the time. the collision pushed the wagon against a telephone post before authorities halted further damage.
Cedar river rises flood bottoms and fields across Cedar county with three to four feet of water covering corn oats rye and pasture. Farmers rescue stock as bridges wash away near Benedict creek while Healey and Hendricks report cattle horses drowned or missing. River falls slowly as showers ease and communities brace for extended travel disruption and costly damage.
The Des Moines paper incorrectly calls Alexander MacGarraugh the last survivor of the Greybeard or 37th Iowa regiment. Muscatine men connected to the unit include David Washburn and C. S. Kincaid, with Captain James G. Wells, King, Nelson, and Wherry named among other living members from Muscatine.
Members of Muscatine company No 12 U A E P will meet at Castle hall tonight to choose whether to hold a Muscatine street fair this fall. Of those interviewed 158 favored the idea while 68 opposed it. Most back the fair only if it is kept free of fakes and shysters that might gull residents.
The sixth heat for the diamond sculls was won by Etherington Smith. The Henley regatta opened with Leanders defeating Kingston for the grand challenge cup. Toronto Argonauts beat University College, and London club won the third heat over Thames crew.
