Holiday traffic toll runs below pre Fourth of July forecast

Cautions by millions of home bound motorists kept nationwide July Fourth weekend traffic deaths well under the 410 predicted by the National Safety Council. Early reports showed a fast start but declined after Saturday afternoon, with officials hopeful final counts would not beat the record toll.

Four Iowa Deaths: 10 Were Predicted

Iowa's July 4 traffic toll reached four, far below the 10 forecast by officials. Memorial Day deaths for the 3-day period totaled 371, a new holiday record, with overall first two long weekends tallying over 725. May-early-year deaths averaged 88 daily, while drownings and other accident categories rose.

Help Pouring in For Flood Victims

Audubon officials of the Red Cross emergency fund appeal said pledges of aid poured in Sunday for southwest Iowa flood victims. Dr. Paul James reported domestic losses near 250000 with pledges from Council Bluffs Clarinda and Shelby County. Donations reached as far as Cozad Nebraska and Centerville Iowa with Defiance Legion post sending 150.

Baby Rescued After Boat Upset on Mississippi River

Sharon Murray of Wapello recounts a dramatic rescue when his six week old daughter Peggy trapped under an overturned boat on the Mississippi near Lake Odessa was freed after about eight to ten minutes. Investigator Admits Wiring Secretary Room Burglarized

Bernard Goldfine's aides accused. hotel room of his secretary Mildred Paperman burgled. A microphone was found set to listen to aides, and bank records and correspondence were reported missing. Jack Lotto, Goldfine PR man, said police were notified.

Muscatine Sailor Killed in Connecticut Jeep Crash

Navy machinist mate James E. Stirlen 24 of Muscatine and passenger Richard Gerometta 19 of Detroit died when their Jeep overturned near North Guilford Connecticut. Both were stationed at Groton submarine base. Stirlen’s parents and several relatives survive. His body to be returned to Muscatine for services.

Adenauer Win Boosts Atom Plans In North Rhine Westphalia

Chancellor Adenauer's Christian Democrats gained a majority in North Rhine Westphalia's Provincial Parliament boosting plans for West Germany's atomic armed forces.
