Scouts Restore One of Iowa's Oldest Cemeteries

Scouts from Jefferson school Troop 99 led by Scoutmaster Murray Moulds worked two Saturdays at Nye Cemetery, an early Muscatine site donated to the Conservation Commission for cleanup. United Rental provided a weed mower to cut high weeds. The project fenced and leveled the area, restoring dignity to the burial ground once neglected.

Youths Detained in Fireworks Disturbance in Muscatine

Muscatine police say three youths were taken into custody after reports of firecrackers exploding around 8:20 p.m. Sunday on Hershey Avenue near Hayes Catholic High School. They were later released. Reports continued near the Driven Theater and in several blocks, with residents requesting police checks due to noise. In June, 37 marriage licenses were issued, with 64 in the second quarter. total quarterly collections were 11 784.96. A car theft involved a 1960 Chevrolet Impala owned by Mrs. Donald Cameron, reported at 8:25 a.m. today, license 70 7042. A 12-volt generator was stolen Sunday from a Corvair owned by Bill Cozad. Police learned of the theft at 4:53 p.m. and the investigation continues.

Izaak Walton League Plans For Thursday

Muscatine chapter of Izaak Walton league will meet Thursday for July business at the chapter house with a guest speaker, games and films. Adolph Kroeger of the Davenport chapter reports on conservation progress against pollution. Nominations for board of directors are being accepted. Films include Sky Blue Waiters Aqua Folly Gunning the Flyways Wild Rivers Life in the Grasslands and Life in the Forests.

Fourth of July events spark Muscatine teen dance and horse show

Muscatine area residents plan a busy Fourth of July with a teen dance at Weed Park old tennis courts from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Muscatine Jaycees, the event features the Epics and an admission of unspecified per couple. The Muscatine Saddle Club will stage its annual July 4 horse show at Kert Stein Park on Tuesday at 10 a.m., with over 300 contestants anticipated.

State Senator Votes For Tax Shift In 1967 Budget

The town legislature ended the 1967 session with a record two year budget and a dawn adjournment on July 2. The senator supports shifting school costs from property taxes to state funds, boosting state aid to schools and easing local tax burdens while acknowledging higher overall taxes, including a sales tax hike to 3 percent and broader service taxation. Also adopted were uniform property assessments, an open records law, a state educational network start fund, and ethics measures for legislators.

Kiwanis International names new president in Houston

Wayne Tooman of Muscatine Kiwanis and Jerry Othmer, secretary, return from Houston where James M. Moser of Town, West Virginia was elected Kiwanis International president for the 1968 term. The convention drew about 16 000 Kiwanians and families. next convention set for Toronto. Local notes include pony lead-in events by Iowa Stockhorse Assn and a showing at 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. with pony and halter contests and a 3 p.m. pony lead-in. Bleachers will be provided for spectators.
