Amsterdam dispatch says Dutch government peace proposals to Great Britain are preliminary and aim to let Boer delegates use cables for field negotiations. Paris report quotes Dr. Leyds denying any Boer request for Dutch mediation and says Kuyper is not authorized to negotiate peace.
In Richmond on January 29 a dispute arose between Rev. Dr. W. P. Hines of Norfolk and the Norfolk and Western Railway over damages for a lost satchel containing 200 sermons. The railroad admits responsibility but resists the sermon valuation set by the preacher.

President and Mrs. Roosevelt hosted a White House dinner and musicale in Miss Alice Roosevelt's honor last night. The event drew more than two hundred attendees from official and social circles, following the dinner.
Washington paper reports a compromise canal bill to be sent to Roosevelt for approval. It would let the President buy the Panama Canal Company and Panama railroad for 40 million dollars with conditions on title, Colombian concessions, and a cost cap of 135 million. Davenport Iowa January 29 The third large fire in eight months struck Bettendorf Axle works yesterday destroying part of the plant used for lumber seasoning. Loss estimated 60 000 to 100 000 with insurance coverage. Separate blaze at Davenport Implement company caused 5 000 loss, insured.

A tenement fire in Boston killed nine Italians and left three injured. Molten metal explosions at Illinois steel works killed two and fatally injured three others.
