Kenyon remains at the forefront of the canal dispute as supporters press a plan to build a waterway from river to river starting at Muscatine. The campaign calls for a memorial address by Cousins and Dellyer to honor the effort and rally backing.
Des Moines Jan 28 Judge W S Kenyon held the Republican lead on the tenth joint ballot for U S senator with A B Funk second and Porter 40, Kenyon 33, Young 26, Funk 30, Garst 1 total 132 Van Camp shifted from Kenyon to Funk Absent or not voting list long. Also notes a memorial address plan for Del Miver and Young heading to Washington with various bills and measures circulating in the Iowa legislature.
Inez Belle Lewis of Oakville and John Beckmann were married January 26 at 5 30 PM at the bride’s home on Pleasant street. Rev A S Covert conducted the ceremony in the presence of family friends. The bride, lifelong Oakville resident, and groom, Oakville resident for two years and Hawkeye Lumber Co manager, plan immediate housekeeping at the Thor son house on Pleasant street.
Five wealthy southern lumbermen, W. S. Harlan, Reagert Gallagher, Dr. W. B. Grace, C. C. Hilton, and E. S. Huggins of Lockhart Alabama, begin federal prison terms for peonage. Harlan and Gallagher get 18 months and fines of 0,000. three others receive thirteen months and 1,000 each. Prosecution led by the Department of Justice. taft pardons sought.
Mason City Iowa January 28 The North Iowa Lumber company yards in this city were purchased by the Northern Lumber company of Hartherville for 45000 The new owners will take possession January 30
Denver January 28 Representative Judkins of Aspet sparked an uproar in the house by saying he was told he could not push bills through unless he backed Mayor Spear of Denver for senator. He later modified his statement. The house took no action.
A Des Moines Evening Press report claims about forty city employees including clerks janitors and cemetery custodians received five dollar monthly street car passes totaling two hundred dollars, allegedly violating state anti pass laws and city government plans.
Chicago January 28 Judge Bridley postponed to Wednesday contempt proceedings brought by the Waterloo club of Iowa against President Tearney and others of the Three Eye league.
The body of Ralph T. Thomas, a Rock Island brakeman from Eldon, Iowa, identified last evening after a fatal early morning accident on the Rock Island road near Letts, Iowa. Coroner C. P. Wagner postponed the inquest in Letts due to the train crew's absence.
President Taft declared the reciprocity agreement is now up to the American people to choose. Representative McCall introduced the administration bill to carry out the Canada pact, sent to the Ways and Means Committee. The funeral of the late BH Brun son will be held from the Fairport Grace Lutheran church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Horace J. Martin of Iowa City will conduct the services. Interment will be made at Fairport cemetery.
Danville Illinois January 28 the grand jury halted hearings on vote traffic and ordered one hundred subpoenas while witnesses ignored subpoenas for Chicago newspaper men. Judge B R Kimbraugh suggested suspending vote selling until spring election to protect sanctity, as the inquisitors reconvene Monday with new witnesses.
Atalissa man T Bruins broke the world intercollegiate rifle record by scoring 197 of 200 in the Iowa-Purdue match at Iowa City. IL R Leeper of Clarksville attempted his own record with 195. Iowa also set a new intercollegiate mark by scoring 1181 of 2000.
Davenport Iowa jan 28 Scott county grand jury denounces the state soldiers orphans home for understaffed schooling with only two hours and a half daily for children over eight and for inadequate hospital facilities citing the inspection report and conditions observed by the town evening press.
Tilbon Jan 28 Foreign Minister Machado said the government will promulgate within a month the decree that severs church and state in Portugal. The move signals a formal separation in laws and governance policy.

A counter suit for divorce is planned by Mrs Schenk counsel. John Schenk states he will not take his wife back even if she is acquitted.
Indianapolis promoters plan a boxing card around February 14 led by Jack Dillon Jack Morgan Jerry Murphy and Young Saylor after the acquittal of William McGee on prize fight charges. The court decision is hailed as a victory for boxing circles and fuels staged bouts.
Warren Chase, aged 68, a pioneer and well known attorney, died at his home near Independence Iowa. He came to Iowa in 1857 and was a notable figure in the community for his long service in law and local affairs. The obituary notes his arrival in the state in 1857 and his prominence in Independence society.
Dorchester Iowa January 28 a farm family home blaze claimed one young life and left three boys with minor burns. The 10 year old son, alone with his siblings, carried the baby and led the others to safety before authorities found the charred body of the little girl upon the parents return.

In Manele Indiana on January 28 engineers Edwards and Schrock were killed and Brakeman Swasher fatally injured after a head on collision on the Chesapeake and Ohio near Blountsville. The trains met on a curve and the Conductor is reported fallen. In Muskegon Michigan a Grand Trunk freight collision killed Conductor Folts and left an engineer fatally hurt with two brakemen seriously injured. Responsibility not yet determined.
