Rotarians award prizes for 76 Crystal Ball results

Muscatine Rotary Club held a January 1976 to 1977 comparison event at Hotel Muscatine naming prize winners in stock market and other categories led by George Shepley as overall Crystal Ball champion. Prizes included Bandag gear and a Texaco energy film.

Iowa Executive Council blocks state funds for Scott defense

The Iowa Executive Council refused to use state funds to pay Sen. John Scott's legal fees in Polk County Court. Atty. Gen. Richard Turner alleges Scott failed to meet residency requirements for his election. The council ordered the Democratic Party committee to fund Scott's defense.

Widow sues over 1974 fatal crash involving truck tractor

Jury selection began in Des Moines for a $375,000 lawsuit filed by Mary Woodard widow of former Polk County Sheriff Jack Woodard. She accuses truck driver Robert W. Miller and his employer Cross Manufacturing Co. of Lewis, Kansas, and Albern Lb. Cross of Des Moines. Miller's vehicle rear-ended Woodard's car on Interstate 35 80 north of Des Moines, causing a fatal crash that led to Woodard's death hours later.

Bedell objects to grain inspection bill provisions

Iowa Representative Berkley Bedell criticized the new grain inspection bill on Monday. He said it mandates more inspections at ports while inland supervision expands sharply, requiring elevators to retain five years of inspection records. Bedell warned the added costs could total up to 598000 dollars in many states and be passed to consumers and producers.

Liability limits debated in Iowa Legislature

Two bills move in the Iowa Legislature to cap government liability for torts. The attorney general notes about 34 million dollars in damages are pending against the state and 30 million more in tort claims filed but not yet in court. Rep. Ravenscraft pleads guilty in larceny of two shotguns

William A. Ravenscraft aged 18 and his brother Samuel 17 pled guilty to larceny over $20 for stealing two shotguns from a rural Moscow resident in November. Ravenscraft admitted to other county crimes involving weapon thefts while awaiting sentencing set for February 22. Samuel Ravenscraft’s case awaits juvenile action.

Theft of auto and billfold reported to sheriff

The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department investigates a theft of a car and billfold reported by Harald Sanders of Wilton. The items disappeared between 7:30 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. today after the owner believed the suspect stayed overnight at his residence.

Muscatine Junior High Choral Festival Saturday

The second Muscatine Junior High Choral Festival will be held at West Junior High Saturday. The 160 voice Festival Chorus will rehearse Saturday afternoon and will present a public concert at 7 30 p.m. Admission is 50 cents. The festival director is Robert A. Long.

YMCA Men’s Breakfast Friday at the YMCA

The monthly YMCA Men’s Fellowship Breakfast takes place Friday from 7 30 to 8 15 a m at the YMCA. Don Hogan, chief of the Muscatine Police Department, leads the program. No reservations. The event welcomes men of all denominations, members or not, with the Festival Chorus performing a selection list. Local schools and directors are named.

Youth arrested for tavern with false ID in Muscatine

A 17 year old Muscatine boy was arrested by police for being in a tavern and using false identification to gain entry at Grits Lounge on Mulberry Avenue. He was released to his mother pending juvenile authorities action. A second item notes a Monday collision at Lombard and East Tenth streets involving Russell E. Purviance and Steven A. Fisher.
