Kellogg Foundation Awards Grant For Muscatine Health Center

The University of Iowa College of Medicine receives a 28 month 387 401 grant from the W K Kellogg Foundation to expand the Model Community Health Center in Muscatine Iowa a city of about 40000 residents The project tests a multi specialty team based primary care delivery and trains health personnel The Muscatine center serves as a prototype for Iowa and supports residency training and community based medical education The grant follows an earlier 495 877 grant in 1973 and parallels a Red Oak regional program funded in 1976 by Kellogg

Man sentenced up to 20 years on arson charge

A Muscatine man, Charles L Miller, 24, was sentenced to up to 20 years in the State Penitentiary after motions for acquittal and a new trial were overruled. Miller faced claims that a juror suggested the verdict was based on another fire. Davenport lawyer Michael Liebbe sought delay for hearings but offered no new evidence. Muscatine Student Named Alternate in Statewide Scholarship Contest

George Tometich of Muscatine High School is named an alternate in the Century TIl Leaders Scholarships statewide contest. Kevin Smith of Waterloo and Kimberly Paaske of Clinton win $1,000 scholarships and an expense paid trip for March 25 to 28 to Williamsburg Virginia to compete for national awards.

Registration Evaluation Task Force for Iowa Republicans

Ten Iowa Republicans named to a blue ribbon Registration Evaluation Task Force to study methods for maximizing favorable voter registration ahead of the 1978 elections. Tom Stonen said the panel will review past registration efforts and propose an aggressive program for the next two years. First meeting at noon Thursday at Republican Headquarters in Des Moines with temporary chair Margaret McDonald of Cherokee.

Muscatine High School to stage Alice in Wonderland

Muscatine High School drama announces the cast for Alice in Wonderland. Lynnette Rogers stars as Alice with Jim Tesch as the White Rabbit and Kris Gregerson as the Mad Hatter. The Feb 12 performance at the high school features many students in roles from the Queen and Knave to the Mock Turtle and Gryphon, directed by Keith Allchin with Barb McElroy as stage manager.

Small grain and forage meeting set for Wednesday

The adult farmer class joins Muscatine County Extension Service for a small grain and forage Production meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Musser Public Library. Harvey Thompson will discuss small grain production topics and Gene Vincent will cover forage stands, fertility, and utilization. Condemnation ruling appeal filed in Muscatine court

Robert T and Dorothy Pape appeal a Dec 21 1976 condemnation jury ruling over their Iowa Avenue property and Pape’s Office Supply. The city offered 53,618 while the jury awarded 56,000 plus interest. Stanley Consultants plans multi level office on urban renewal parcels. Hearing set about 20 days after perfection of the appeal.

Rotarians elect officers for 1977 78 year

Rotarians chose officers for July 1977 to June 1978 at Hotel Muscatine. Herbert Wilson serves as president with Bill Keller as president elect Ken Gregersen as vice president Paul Sweitzer as secretary Herb Leu as treasurer and Steve Wateman and Dave Stanley as directors. Janet Morgan spoke on Mothers and Children Learning Together a MCC adult education program funded by federal funds with classes at the college and GED guidance. Willard Stromval gave a short bio and the board of directors will meet Monday at 11 a.m. at Hotel Muscatine. Next week Texaco will present an energy program.

13 year old girl arrested for shoplifting here

A 13 year old local girl was apprehended Monday for shoplifting at Stiles Drug and Ace Hardware, 230 E. 2nd Lt. Police released her to her grandmother shortly before 5 p.m. Also Monday John Robbins, Muscatine, charged with public intoxication on E. Fourth Street and released on summons. One theft and one accident reported: Nora Leuck reported theft of a full length raccoon coat valued at 700 dollars from Gallery Shoppes. A two car collision occurred at Park Avenue and Lake Park Boulevard at about 4 a.m. involving Edward L. Gerdis and Elaine C. Reid.

Muscatine native named as assistant to Leach

James Leach of Iowa appoints Muscatine native John Butler as legislative assistant after a stint in the National Association of Manufacturers International Economic Affairs. Butler, 27, has degrees from St. Ambrose College and Johns Hopkins SAIS, served in the Army, interned at the Defense Department, and is married to Linda Paulsen of Davenport. He will monitor legislation and act as district liaison.
