Trustees Award 498 702 Contract For Electric System Construction

Trustees of the municipal electric department awarded a 498 702 dollar contract to Casler Electric Co for construction of three substations electrical ring construction and modifications at the power plant substation. The amended contract is 15 500 lower than the original bid after negotiations.

Central State Bank promotes two officers at annual meeting

John B. Rigler announced the promotion of L. D. Krueger to executive vice president and trust officer and L. J. Horst to senior vice president and cashier. A 100 percent stock dividend was approved, increasing capital stock to 500000 with 250000 from profits, yielding one new share per existing share. Deposits rose to 24 million, aided by Muscatine industry and favorable farm prices.

Plan and Zoning Elects Woman as Chairman in Muscatine

Mrs. Margaret Root was chosen Tuesday evening as chairman of the 11 member Muscatine plan and zoning commission. She succeeds J William Mark who led the panel for two years. Mark remains a member. Root has five years on the commission and four years as vice chairman. Donald A Ahls named new vice chairman, appointed April 1966 to fill unexpired term of William Schafenacker, has missed only one meeting since. The world’s tallest herb Puya raimondii, 49 feet high, grows in the Bolivian Andes and blooms once every 150 years before dying after a single flower stalk.

Five From Muscatine Win University Scholarships

Five Muscatine students and one Morning Sun recipient earned Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Foundation scholarships to study at the University of Iowa. Awards range from 250 to 500 dollars, based on grade average activities and need. Winners include Viola Beatty Jeanne Pahl Janet Roberts Dennis White and Michael McRoberts from Muscatine and Michael Bryant from Morning Sun. All but one are Illinois residents.

Five American servicemen cited for aiding Tokyo rape suspect arrest

Five U S servicemen on leave from Vietnam including S Sgt Gary Miller of Muskeegan were cited by Tokyo police for rescuing a Japanese girl from an attempted rape near Azaba district park. They stopped a taxi, detained two suspects with help from Larry Delaney of the U S Customs Office, and aided police.

Richard Howard Kerr of Rt. 3 Muscatine was arrested by Muscatine police at 8th and Spring on Tuesday night for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated He was booked at 9:55 p m Kerr waived preliminary this morning before Justice of the Peace Bay Pace and was bound over to district court He was released on a $500 bond.

Park Lane site may get underground wiring for homes

Muscatine Municipal Water and Electric Board discussed underground electrical wiring for the Park Lane development with more than 200 building lots. No formal action, but developers showed interest. if chosen, about $100 per lot extra for underground lines. Water mains estimated at 87000 dollars, to be deposited by the developer and refunded via system connections over years. Lawrence, new chairman, urged staff to confer with the developer. Beach Lumber will gain title to the nearly Sidacre course on Sept 16. Also, a 2300 foot water main extension on Stewart Road for automatic sprinklers was reviewed, with attorney study of charges. Board commended Don Tietge and A M Thornton for completing water works operator certificates.

Home Builders to Receive State National Charters

A Muscatine County Home Builders Association dinner will feature charter presentations for state and national groups at the Elks lodge with a 6 p.m. social hour. Fort Madison Man Appeals Murder Conviction

Burlington AP reports James A. Arthur, 38, of Fort Madison, filed notice in Des Moines County District Court to appeal his second degree murder conviction. He is serving a term in the State Penitentiary for the fatal June 19 shooting of Mrs. Helen A. Barker, 38, of Burlington, a divorced woman.
