Boston January 8 J William Henry Johnson a colored man said to be a regularly ordained Baptist minister admitted stealing small sums from cash drawers in various departments. He told police he took amounts after church meetings and at local shops. Authorities said he faces charges in several precincts.
Johnson, a night porter at the state house, was caught rifling the drawer in the office of the bureau of registration in pharmacy. He received a six month imprisonment sentence.
Miss Lizzie Hutchison of the country became ill after a sleepwalking episode. She rose in the night, wore her shoes, walked ten miles to her sister’s home and was found the next morning over a mile from home. She was thoroughly chilled and may suffer for the long walk.
Newton Ia Jan 8 Chester Myler a colored man was convicted of murder in the first degree in the shooting of Dr B M Failer in September last. The jury deliberated four hours and fixed the penalty at life imprisonment with hard labor in the penitentiary. The case is described as the most interesting trial in years.
In a senate invocation the chaplain prayed for reporters and correspondents marking the first time in Senate history that these journalists were honored in prayer. The remark occurred during the session in Washington on January 8.

St. Paul Minnesota January 8 Cole and Jim Younger have applied to the State Board of Pardons for commutation of life sentences for murder to thirty five years. Allowing good time they have already served thirty six years for their share in the Northfield raid. They say friends are ready to set them up in business in Missouri their old home. They are now out on parole and cannot leave Minnesota.
Washington D C Jan the house resumed debate on the canal bill with Parker of New Hampshire signaling an amendment to give the president power to choose the best route. The president sent to the senate nominations for Shaw as secretary of the treasury Payne as postmaster general and John Crossland of Missouri as minister to Liberia.
Chicago January 8 Governor Leslie M Shaw of Iowa spoke at the Union League club outlining plans after his Washington appointment as successor to Secretary Gage.
