Registration costs 1.75 including luncheon at noon and sessions run 10:40 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elks club. William H. McConnell of the University of Town will open with Here Today Where Tomorrow directing studies on rural accidents. Dr Lawrence H. Hannah of Monsanto will discuss The Birth of a New Agricultural Chemical. Afternoon talks feature Fred Swinton Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance and R J Solomon Citizens National Bank Macomb Ill. The first institute drew 150 attendees, mostly farmers.
Tom Masterson, 17, a Muscatine High School athlete, remains in serious condition after a spinal neck injury suffered during a wrestling practice on Dec 27. His parents report progress as he regains feeling in the upper torso and feet while continuing treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Don Klebe project chairman for the Distinguished Service Award says entries are due Friday Jan 13 at midnight. Eligible are men up to age 35 for a community service award. nominees need not be Jaycees members.
The Hoover district of the Boy Scouts will appoint a new district executive on January 7. Don Tracy will assume the post, arriving from Denver where he also serves as district executive. Tracy previously held roles in Duluth and St Paul and has over 18 years as a scout executive plus four years as a scoutmaster. The vacancy followed David Baur’s 1966 resignation for a Quad-City industry position.
Rural residents outside Muscatine will borrow from the P.M. Musser public library at no charge in 1967, with a planned 1500 dollar from the C. R. Musser estate grant funded by a long held gift. The Muscatine county board of Supervisors approved the trial, reviewing the program each summer.
Mrs Latricia King of 1415 Lincoln Blvd has been hired as assistant director of the new Neighborhood Center operated by the Office of Economic Opportunity. She is a Bethel A.M.E. Church member and will be at the center during its operating hours.
Prof A S Gillette of the University of Iowa Theatre will speak at the Muscatine Masquers February 21 meeting. The Masquers opened the year with new members welcomed by Eldon Benedict and formed a play screening committee for 1967 68 season.
The Elks Lodge hosts a bridge and 500 card party at 8 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse. Regular lodge meetings resume Monday January 3 at 8 p.m.
Police investigated a burglary at Lev's garage 810 East Second Street after glass was broken to enter. Missing were $2 to $3 in employees' coffee money. The farm implement store had been locked by 7:45 p m Tuesday.
Rock Island Lines will rebuild three street crossings in Muscatine during the coming spring. Edward Fuller, local railroad agent, said the improvements are a carry-over from 1966 and were programmed for last year but could not be completed. The crossings on East Fifth Street, East Ninth Street, and Isett Avenue will be upgraded.
The city engineer reports 1966 closed with 108 new home permits worth 1,536,830 dollars, a year ending total of 3,624,202 dollars across 322 permits for all construction and remodeling. December alone added 51,249 dollars in nine permits, led by three new home permits totaling 4,400 dollars.
William S. Porter, 60, of route 1 Nichols faces a second offience of operating while intoxicated. Porter was arrested Tuesday afternoon by the state highway patrol a mile west of Nichols on highway 22 and taken to Muscatine for preliminary arraignment before Justice of the Peace Walter Pilgram.
