Elevator Tragedy Kills Two at State House in Des Moines

Des Moines reports an elevator accident at the state house leaves Mrs. C B Fountain and her mother Mrs A Hoch dead. The operator started the cage as Mrs Hoch retreated, trapping both women between cage and ceiling then floor and roof. Legislature adjourned as details spread. no inquest planned.

Four Die in Dyersville Rail Crash on Farley Hill

A Chicago Great Western through train at 8:30 p.m. crashed into a switch engine pulling sixty cattle cars near Dyersville Iowa. Four men were killed: W G Griswold A R Thomas J W Ryme Thomas Cavanaugh. One man F L Food was fatally injured. The wreck sent flames and destruction across the wreck site.

Rochester Fire Destroys Major Downtown Blocks

A devastating blaze in Rochester began at 4:30 this morning in the Rochester Dry Goods Co. basement. Fire spread to Granite Building and Beadle & Sherburne, drawing Erie and Syracuse aid. Loss estimated at 4 to 5.9 million dollars with several firms impacted including Sibley Lindsay and Carr and Walkover Shoe Co. Firemen used dynamite to halt spread as water mains froze and hundreds faced disruption.

Dome Scaffold Collapse at Chicago Post Office Kills Fifteen

In Chicago on February 26 a massive scaffold in the dome of the new post office building collapsed, sending fifteen workers 250 feet to the first floor. The Lennox Haldeman company supervised interior decorations. Rescue efforts by ten fire companies were hampered by extreme cold as bodies were recovered from the wreckage.

Double Murder in Buffalo Bank Building Office

Henry L. Swartz of Baker and Swartz was fatally shot in his Marine bank building office in Buffalo. H A Knowles of Knowles and Gardner shot Swartz then killed himself after a brief standoff. The crime is thought to stem from business complications and Swartz died after transfer to hospital.

In Sigourney Iowa on February 26 Mrs Belle Lewis was acquitted of murdering her husband. The crowd roared with joy and friends celebrated as she is set to receive a $2000 life insurance payout.

Fire of Unknown Origin Destroys Property in Wapello

A blaze in Wapello Iowa last evening destroyed property valued at thirty five thousand dollars. Fire officials have not yet determined the cause and reduced the scene to embers as investigators survey the ruins.

A four hour blaze in Wapello Iowa gutted the Garrett block and damaged the Sweeney building with losses estimated at 35000 dollars. Volunteers and citizens saved the rest of the business district. Insurance covers most losses in several entities while others face uninsured totals. Fire started in a rear shed and spread rapidly despite strong water pressure.
