Soviet Vote Lets U.N. Use Force Over Congo Crisis

In a tense U.N. Security Council session, the Soviet Union yielded to Asian and African pressure to approve a resolution authorizing force to prevent civil war in the Congo. The vote, 9-1 with the United States opposing and the USSR abstaining, sparked regional backlash as Katanga mobilized its forces and Congo's leadership faced calls for Belgian troop withdrawal and Hammarskjöld’s departure. Ceylon, Liberia, and the U.A.R. backed the plan to avert broader conflict while restraining Congo troops from politicization.
