Washington reports Gov. Cummins will not be a vice presidential candidate. Roosevelt agrees to Iowa Idea plank for the GOP platform as Cummins returns from Washington. Aioned talks focused on trust policy and party unity ahead of the summer convention.
Washington Feb 21 The extra session prospects look favorable with nine days remaining in the current session and Senate deadlock unchanged. Next week's plan includes a defiency appropriation bill for 10 to 12 million dollars on Monday and a Tuesday vote on the Senate substitute to the Philippine coinage bill.
In Constantinople on February 21 reports say warlike measures persist. Balkan reserves are being called out in the Salonica district while the Porte orders the Smyrna Kasabe railway to ready twenty five thousand reserves for transport to Macedonia.
London reports the British government will issue a new election writ Monday for Galway North after Col Lynch, recently convicted of treason for Boer War actions, faces a life sentence yet is expected to seek re election. A Chicago and Minneapolis passenger train on the Illinois Central collided head on with a freight train at Galena last night. Four killed include firemen and the engineer. The northbound passenger train was said to be speeding, several cars and locomotives leaving the rails. No passengers were reported hurt.
Racine Wisconsin reports Julius Kertemeier ten years old lies unconscious in what may be a dying state accusing Emma Oliver his teacher of striking him with a heavy book two weeks earlier corroborated by three other boys. Oliver denies the charge and says the boy has not been under her charge for two months as officials review the case.
St Paul, Feb 21. Negotiations center on a $70,000,000 double track electric freight and passenger line from Duluth to the Gulf of Mexico. John W Gates is tipped to lead the financiers with eastern capital also involved. Prominent St Paul and Minneapolis men have signed the charter application.
Washington reports Senator Depew was arrested and brought to the senate to help form a quorum. He appeared in evening clothes for social duties as proceedings paused and colleagues stared in surprise. Senators Quay and Morgan temporarily halted their filibuster.
Mrs. W. L. Smith of 205 Locust Street says she is a descendant of author H. Rider Haggard. She possesses a family history tracing ancestry from 1400 in England to the present, including her maiden name Haggard.
Snow has fallen for seven days in St Johns Newfoundland with drifts up to thirty feet. Dog teams carrying fuel and food began aid missions to the interior where two trains with over a hundred passengers are snowed in. The government has summoned railways to assist in the rescue efforts.
Governor Cummins fuels tariff revision rumors after a meeting with the President. He will stay in Washington through Monday, then head to Florida for rest and health. Officials say no tariff revision before 1904 and a plank may appear if Cummins is renominated. The public focus remains on policy and political timing.

Ed Knight a prominent attorney and land dealer in Lorimer county was shot twice in a store by Coffee Pot Wilson at 6 30 PM. Knight died on scene and Wilson was arrested by a constable as officers sought Creston jail. The feud stemmed from a long running family dispute dividing the region.
Webster City Indiana Feb 21 Mrs John Ebberg of Stanhope made a suicide attempt by drinking concentrated lye early last night. Doctors report no hope of recovery as she sinks. Family troubles cited as cause. Mrs Ebberg 45 leaves five children.
A fire at the Sturgis Cornish and Burn factory in Chicago killed one man and injured several after a panic. The plant employed about 300 workers. Flames began on the first floor where large quantities of chemicals were stored. The death toll may rise.
Salt Lake City legislator Mrs. C. E. Coulter introduces a bill forbidding candidates to treat voters with ice cream lemonade cigars soda water liquor and ham sandwiches plus illegal bootleg beer and whisky. Penalty ranges from a $50 to $300 fine or six months in jail.

Senator-Elect Reed Smoot of Utah made a five hour stop in Chicago on the way to Washington. He stayed as a guest of Eugene H. Anderson, Chicago representative for the Salt Lake woolen mills in which Smoot is interested.

Frank M. Richardson of the Scott Wrigley Hammond banking firm wandered from his home Tuesday night and was found dead today in the woods one mile from the city. His clothing had been removed except for underclothes and authorities believe he was suddenly deprived of reason and perished from exposure.
In Rome on February 21 the pope underwent a last tooth removal. The operation caused pain but left him stronger and more cheerful after yesterday's jubilee ceremony.

Davenport Iowa February 21 scaffold fall at the Soldiers Orphans home killed John C Davis of Davenport and wounded four other workmen. Davis was the only married man and father of twenty children, eighteen still living, many relying on his second wife.
Washington February 21 the senate met to go into executive session but there was no quorum present and the doors were thrown open in legislative session.

Cedar Rapids Iowa February 21 seven dead and eight feared after the Clifton hotel blaze. Fire officials cite possible cause as crossed electric wires in the basement. Among the dead are W A Mowry What Cheer E G Young Minneapolis L C Burnett Nebraska City and G E Holmes with several others missing or injured. The ruin search continued through the night as patients improve and some victims are moved from hospitals. Charles Cook of Williamsburg survived. Jackson of Cincinnati remains missing.
Mrs. J L McColm receives notice of the death of her brother Frank L Pollock at his sister Mrs Willis Ady's home in Atalissa at 5 am. Born June 22 1865 Pollock was the youngest son of Samuel and Levira Pollock and spent much of his life in the west. The funeral is set for Sunday at 1 am from Atalissa and will proceed by carriage to Greenwood cemetery for burial in this city.
