Mondale bill critics say cost may derail support
Critics argue the measure is too expensive amid a weak economy. If enacted it would fund $150 million in 1976, $700 million in 1977, and $1 billion in 1978 for child services including day care, health, education, and family support programs. Opponents warn of increased bureaucracy and political battles in Congress. Mondale defends the bill as voluntary and cites broad support from church and civic groups while noting competing federal subsidies elsewhere.

Energy loss raises food costs say ISU researchers
ISU researchers Barth Heady and Dan Droskin warn that a 5 percent cut in agricultural energy use could lift food prices by 13 percent. A 10 percent cut may push costs up 42 percent, and a 15 percent reduction could cause such large increases that they doubt it would occur even in severe energy shortages.
