Masquers donate funds to Muscatine High School project

The Muscatine board approved a $2000 contribution from the Masquers community theater toward drapes and lights at Central High School auditorium. The panel also authorized a five item wiring project at the new high school and discussed selling or buying land in a closed session after adjournment.

Scouts Celebrate 66th Anniversary With Awards Night

Lincoln School PTA sponsored Troop 116 observed the 66th scouting anniversary at Wesley United Methodist Church with a potluck and a ceremony. Principal Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brooks were honored guests as Rex Tomassen and others received merit and skill awards, plus two ranks awarded, while Troop leadership and committee for the coming year were announced.

Marine promoted to private first class at Pendleton

Eldon A. Mohror was promoted to PFC while enrolled in communications school at Camp Pendleton California. He enlisted in the U S Marines last August and lives in Oceanside with his wife Patricia McCormac formerly of Letts. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Max Mohror of Rt 5.

Corn Prices Seen Strengthening Modestly in Months

Washington AP. Agriculture Department experts say corn prices may gain modestly in coming months due to stronger livestock feeding demand and heavy export flows. The Outlook and Situation Board projects a national farm price near 2.50 per bushel for the 1975 76 season, down from about 3.00 last year. No 2 yellow corn in Chicago around 2.58 per bushel, about 85 cents below last year but above harvest lows. Prospects for 1976 crops will influence 1975 corn prices as spring unfolds.

Dr. Shriver to Head Union Theological Seminary

Dr. Donald W. Shriver Jr. will be inaugurated Wednesday as president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is a Presbyterian minister born in Norfolk, Virginia, who has served as pastor and university teacher in Raleigh and Atlanta. His wife Peggy Ann Leu is sister to Jean Stamey of Muscatine. the Leu family long resided there. Union Theological Seminary, founded about 140 years ago, is a leader in training ministers and scholars for the Christian faith.

YMCA plans Y's Men's Olympics

The YMCA will close Thursday night February 12 for the annual Y's Men's Service Club Olympics. The pool closes at 5 p.m. and the building to the public after 6:30 p.m. About 120 men from Muscatine Rotary, Port City Kiwanis, Kiwanis Muscatine, Jaycees, Lions, Optimists and Y's Men's Club compete in bridge, swimming, pie eating, table tennis, volleyball and more to foster fellowship among service clubs.

McDaniel hearing set for Maquoketa

Former Muscatine Police Chief Wayne McDaniel faces a second accommodation hearing in Maquoketa starting March 10 after a venue change to Jackson County. He was convicted Sept 19 on three counts of delivering marijuana and barbiturates for profit to Barbara Edington. the Iowa Supreme Court ordered withdrawal of that ruling and requires a jury to hear whether the delivery was for profit or accommodation, with prison risk if for profit and possible up to one year if accommodation.

Iowa dairymen vote on dairy checkoff referendum

About half of Iowa dairymen voted in the first mail ballot agricultural checkoff referendum. Agriculture Secretary Robert Lounsberry said tabulation of about 7,700 ballots was not expected to be completed until Tuesday. The vote concerns a major change in the dairy checkoff program funds for promotion of dairy products.

Two men arrested in Muscatine burglaries

Muscatine City Police arrested Jim Vargas and Ira Stines on breaking and entering charges after a burglary at Garys Friendly Tap and related break ins. About $200 cash, $7 in change, and a wrist watch were taken from a apartment on W 2nd Street, while Phylis Rhodes reported a burglary of a purse and transistor radio with no value listed.
