Hydro Plant Brings Honor To Liberia Project Team

Eight members of Stanley Consultants and Stanley Engineering Africa were decorated by Liberian president for the Mount Coffee hydroelectric project dedication in Monrovia. The $27 million venture, a Liberia US AID joint effort, marks the first two units of a six unit plant delivering power to Monrovia and nearby communities. Stanley offices in Muscatine and Monrovia led design and engineering, with Africa operations team centrally involved.

Fines Follow Two Charges

Howard F Hatfield of European hotel faced two charges arraigned before Justice of the Peace Bay Pace. He was fined 25 dollars on each charge for tampering with a motor vehicle and assault and battery after an incident at a Hershey avenue car wash. Alma Walker was the complainant in both cases.

Board Sets 3 Rezoning Hearings in Muscatine County

Muscatine county supervisors announce public hearings February 27 to consider three rezoning requests. Ben F. Nichols seeks 3.21 acres west of Nichols from Agriculture to Heavy Industry for a Kent Feeds elevator and related use. Ronald Reuss requests rezoning of one acre in Wapello Township from A-1 agriculture to A-1 residential where a dwelling exists. Matthew J. Fox Jr. seeks 2.3 acres in Sweetland Township from Agriculture to Light Industrial to store construction equipment near Wilton and Highway 61. The commission favored Nichols and Reuss with conditions. Fox’s request was recommended against due to high farming value. The Rock Island Railroad reported year-end net income of 1,898,000, up from 1,451,000.

In Davenport a U S District Court trial, defense argues Conesville resident Lyle E. Tompkins was home when the Winfield Farmers National Bank heist occurred. DETROIT AP sources say federal auto safety rules will be among factors auto makers consider when pricing 1968 cars. They declined to specify how much safety items will raise prices. In 1967 safety features had boosted retail car prices by averages of 56 to 69 dollars.

Russians Snowball Chinese Diplomats in Moscow Station

Thousands of Russians shouted and pelted snowballs at Chinese diplomats as a group of Chinese students departed for Peking. The chief diplomat’s car was held up for 20 riotous minutes before returning to the Chinese embassy. Soviet delegations pressed protests outside the Soviet Embassy in Peking for a fourth day amid Red Guard demonstrations and assaults on Russians. The embassy refused to open its doors, and demonstrators pasted protests on the glass.

Woman Accused of Forgery Held in Davenport

Anna Fay Little, 25, of Davenport, held on four counts of forgery in Muscatine district court and conspiracy to commit grand larceny in Davenport. She allegedly cashed a $460 cattle sale check from a Rock Island bank that had been stopped after cattle theft. Richard W. Houston, 43, also faced a grand larceny charge for taking four Angus cattle near Davenport. Little waived preliminary hearing and posted $1,000 bond on each charge. Houston was arrested at his home and is in custody.

Jaycees Set For Waterloo Board Session

Muscatine Jaycees prepare for the Iowa Jaycee state board meeting February 10 to 12 in Waterloo. Delegates include John Axel who will compete in Speak Up Jaycee, and officers Wayne Garrett Jack Smith Duane Keough with board members Max Churchill and Don Klebe. Traci Jaycees host. about 800 attendees expected. Speakers include Col Jeremiah Boland Evan Hultman and Jay Beecroft with leadership forums Saturday.

Bruce Barrett Tops Iowa Safe Driving Incentive Winners

Bruce Barrett a Muscatine High School senior and Sun Mart employee is named one of two Iowa winners in Ford Motor company's Safe Driving Incentive Program for Young Americans. Nationwide 3,200 youths won awards. forty Ford autos were top prizes and 46 Iowa youths received transistor radios. Barrett qualified by clean driving record July 1 to Sept 30, 1966, submitting essays and driving-rule quiz results.
