Fire destroys barn and pigs near Muscatine
Sweetland reports a large barn fire at Vernon Shepard’s farm about eight miles northeast of Muscatine. The blaze began around 11 p.m. Saturday, destroying a herd of 11 sows and 80 pigs before crews from Durant Wilton and Muscatine contained it after a second flare at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

About 225 people attended a massed band concert Saturday evening in the Wilton gym. Fire damages Carl Broderson home in Sweetland Township
Saturday a fire of undetermined origin damaged the interior of the five room frame home of the Carl Broderson family. Mrs. Broderson and three daughters escaped. main damage was to furniture and window frames. Firemen also put out a blaze in a sanitation truck in the 300 block off Cedar Street. A separate motor overheat caused smoke damage at the Jay Beckley home three miles east on Highway 22.

Donovan Dies at 76 After Heart Attack in Washington
Former spy chief and wartime OSS director William J. Donovan died of a heart attack at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. He was 76 and had attended a luncheon in New York with Dwight D. Eisenhower in December 1952 as a member of The Committee on the Present Danger.
