Senator attacks truth gap over Highway pay raise in Iowa

DES MOINES AP Sen David Stanley R Muscatine assailed a truth gap in Hughes administration citing claims of a secret deal by the Iowa Highway Commission when Joseph Coupal was hired and given a raise. He pointed to a letter urging secrecy and urged open records and meetings. Hughes opposed then supported the raise citing prior promises. Frommelt defended the governor and favored open council business.

Boy on Sled Hit by Car in Muscatine

A boy age 10 was listed in good condition at Muscatine General hospital after a sledding accident. Police said he coasted down a hill near Chestnut and 10th streets when his sled struck a car driven by Eugene Lambrecht of West 11th Street. The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. Monday. the boy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Brown of 1432 Cedar Street.

Circle K Club Active At College

Circle K at Muscatine Community College active under Mike Barrick president. Club aids college registration, hosts mixers, funds wrestling uniforms, and sends Christmas cards. It is establishing a scholarship fund aiming for a 200 or 300 dollar award. Also present were Denny Cozad and Frank Ralston. A petition circulated by citizens seeks zoning for parking right of way.

President Johnson asked the Senate for prompt ratification of a treaty barring outer space use for nonpeaceful purposes. He noted that the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and many other nations have already signed the pact.

State Hospital at Clarinda Not Accredited

DES MOINES AP The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals refused to accredit the Iowa Mental Health Institute at Clarinda citing staff and record keeping shortcomings. Of Iowa’s four mental hospitals only Cherokee is accredited. Independence Mount Pleasant have applied but not inspected. Dr J C Cromwell, director of mental health, voiced slim hope for accreditation soon.

Ice halts tow on the Mississippi near Burlington

A Kay A towboat pushing empty grain barges faced a two mile ice gorge about 10 miles north of Burlington and turned back while heading to Meeker's Landing 16 miles north of the city. In Amman a military plane arrived with over 30 people including a top Egyptian intelligence officer seeking political asylum.

Another Day And Another Car Damaged

Police report a series of minor auto incidents involving Harmion and Harmon families near East Third Street and Cedar Street. A 1959 model car struck a parked vehicle, damaging the left rear corner, and another 1959 car struck a truck four feet from the curb. Wayne Lee Finke, 18, was involved in a westbound crash with a parked Harrison vehicle. his wife Linda, 18, suffered a bruised knee. Finke paid a $20 fine plus costs in police court for failure to control.

Speeds Past School On Park With 50 MPH Fine

Joel Michael Connor, 19, of Lincoln, was cited for speeding on Park Avenue near Lincoln School at 11:45 a.m. He faced a $56 fine plus costs after being arrested by Sheriff Dick Oppelt in the Justice of the Peace Bay Pace court. The patrol followed him south on Park as signs limited speed to 20 mph.
