Former Muscatine Resident Is Waterloo Man of the Year

Sydney Thomas of Waterloo, son of Mrs. AP Thomas of Muscatine, is honored by the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year. An attorney and longtime public servant, he chaired the Waterloo school board for four years, serves on the Boy Scouts executive board, and held past offices with the Waterloo Jaycees and the Chamberboard. He is a Methodist church trustee, Sunday school teacher, and a lay teacher, now in his 12th year on the school board. he also chaired the Stanley for Senator campaign in Black Hawk County and sits on the Republican Central Committee. He is married with six children. his Muscatine brother John and his wife attended the dinner.

Presbyterian Church Installs Assistant Pastor in Muscatine

The Rev. Donald L. Owen, formerly pastor at Westminster in Burlington, is installed as Assistant Pastor at the Presbyterian church in Muscatine. Born in Cedar Rapids, he later earned a BA from Coe College in 1960 and a BD from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1964. He was ordained in Cedar Rapids in 1964 and served Ax Tell Neb before moving to Burlington in 1966. Mrs. Owen, Doris Touro, is from Cedar Rapids. They have two children, Jeffrey and Michelle. The Owens reside at 1311 Terrace Heights.

Family aided by relatives after mobile home fire

The Bud Hazelwood family is staying at the home of son Bud Hazelwood Jr. at 610 Woodlawn Ave Muscatine after a fire destroyed their 1968 Windsor trailer. No injuries were reported. Firemen arrived at 6 51 p m to prevent damage to nearby units. The family had lived there three months while investigators probe a kitchen and bedroom area for a possible cause.

A correction clarifies Jerry Lange at Franklin School was misidentified as director of Summer Head Start programs. Lange is Title I program director for the Migrant Summer School under the U.S. Office of Education, not director of Head Start administered through 10.E.0.

Drake Named To 4 State Committees

Drake Muscatine was sworn in as the new State Representative from Louisa Muscatine subdistrict No 1 in Des Moines and was named to four committees by the Speaker of the House. He will serve on Rumian and Industrial Relations State Government Schools and Transportation. He discussed Muscatine bridge plans with Attorney General Turner and the Iowa Highway Commission and noted a court test of the Iowa Bridge Act with bonding company lawyers in Chicago. The highway commission said bridge construction will begin this summer. Drake also hired a legislative secretary, Mrs Mary Friedman of Des Moines.

Mayor Attends Law Academy Graduation

Muscatine mayor ES Burns joined state and municipal officials at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy graduation held at Camp Dodge. Charles Geertz of the Muscatine Police Force was among 37 officers who graduated.

Teen Dance Tonight at National Guard Armory

A teen dance sponsored by the Muscatine Red Sox will be held tonight at the National Guard armory from 8 to 11. Music by the Apricot Anarchy. Tickets cost 1.25 for singles and 1.75 for couples. A sledding party in Weed Park drew about 15 Scouts and three adults, returning to Scoutmaster Robert Danner’s home for refreshments. Eric John Wagner, from Muscatine, pledged to Sigma Phi Epsilon at Monmouth College in Illinois. he is the son of Mrs Juanita E. Wagner.

Muscatine Teacher Nears 52 Years at Garfield School

Kathleen Asp of Muscatine, a Garfield school veteran, will complete 52 years in June. She began in 1917 in rural Muscatine County, joined Garfield in 1919, and has taught second through eighth grades under eight superintendents and five principals. She recalls modest pay early in her career, notes lifelong community ties, and cherishes a 1957 National Teachers Centennial experience.

Sing-Out Receives New Flag From VFW

Museca tine and the Muscatine Sing-Outs gain a new American flag for Up With People performances. VFW presented the flag as the group performs at venues lacking a large standard flag. Kirby Kleffmann notes his wife is sewing bold fringe on the flag while a top eagle-standard is sought. Linda Lee Smith, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Smith, will give a bassoon recital Feb 8 at 2 p.m. in North Recital Hall, University of Iowa. She, a university junior, performs for an honors degree in musical performance.
