Navy lifts veil from new plane Corsair II
The Navy has removed the confidential label from the A7 Corsair II, a lightweight jet bomber designed for limited war needs in Vietnam. Navy and Air Force plans call for about 1,600 Corsairs over five years at an estimated 1.5 billion dollars, with both services increasing orders including an Air Force change to around 600. The aircraft and its television guided Walleye missile are expected to enter service this year in limited numbers, with Navy hopes for 35 Corsairs in fleet operation by spring. The A7 aims at pinpoint strikes in support of ground troops and air superiority, despite its low slow profile for a fast jet era. Details note a maximum payload cruise speed of 560 miles per hour and top speed of 604 mph.
