Ninety nine New Home Permits Issued Here in 1967

Ninety nine building permits for new homes were issued in Muscatine during 1967 totaling 1 611 055 dollars. Non residence permits numbered 72 for 15 822 905 dollars. The electric plant addition is included in non residence totals. Last year 108 new residence permits were issued for 1 536 630 dollars. Building Official Kenneth Dusenberry cited rising costs and pricier homes as factors. December showed eight new residence permits for 119 350 dollars, plus nine non residence permits totaling 14 250 890 dollars including the electric plant addition.

NEA President Fischer to address Muscatine teachers

National Education Association president elect George Fischer will address the First Invitational Educational Community Dinner in Muscatine on January 15, sponsored by the Muscatine City Education Association. Over 200 teachers and guests are expected. Local chairman Ronald Sturms and committee members plan the affair. Fischer will take office next July at the national convention.

Increased Postal Rates Go Into Effect Jan. 7

Acting Postmaster Walter I Conway announced new postage increases effective January 7 for all mail classes except parcel post and international mail. First class letters rise to six cents, airmail to ten cents, post cards to five cents, and air mail cards to eight cents. Second class, bulk third class, controlled circulation, and fourth class educational materials also see rate hikes with per ounce and per piece changes, while some items retain prior rates.

Elderly Woman Struck By Car Injures Wrist

Margaret Lindsay, 74, of 124 W 3rd street, is in fair condition at Muscatine General Hospital with a broken wrist after being struck by an auto at 1 30 p m Wednesday while crossing in Muscatine. Timothy Géhring, 20, of 1616 Willow street, was turning east from Chestnut onto West 2nd and could not stop in time. Genting was to appear in police court for failing to yield to a pedestrian. A second crash at 12:15 p m Wednesday involved George Bernard Dwyer, 42, of 304 Myrtle Lane, and Clarence Emil Dreyer, 48, of 1254 Halstead street, causing front-end and left-side damage to both cars on Oak and East 5th streets.

Trucker Robert Leonard Sentenced in Muscatine County Court

Trucker Robert Leonard of Muscatine received 30 days in Muscatine County jail after a district court verdict on a January 6 charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Leonard was arrested at 8th and Cedar streets in Muscatine, with plea entered May 5 and jury verdict on December 19.

No Garbage Collection Here Monday

Muscatine garbage trucks will not run their regular routes Monday on New Year’s Day. The usual Monday pick-up will be made Saturday with the reg u lar Saturday collection. Residents on the Monday route should set garbage out Friday night. Muscatine public library will be closed all day today and Saturday for inventory and reopens Tuesday with James White as head librarian succeeding Opal Tanner.

Burglary Report Claims 42 Bulbs Stolen From Home Display

A seasonal outdoor light display at Richard Koll's home on Oakland Drive saw 42 colored bulbs stolen. Police were alerted around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday. Also reported are agriculture and livestock market figures from Chicago and Omaha, including potato shipments and hog and cattle prices.

Ron Arnold Named Public Relations Director at State Farm

Ron L. Arnold a former Muscatine Journal reporter and sports editor has been promoted to public relations director at State Farm Insurance Companies home office in Bloomington Ti. He began at State Farm in 1960 and rose to superintendent in 1964 before becoming assistant director in 1965. He is married to Margery Stegall of Muscatine and the couple, with five children, resides at 104 Vale Street Bloomington.
