The Sick Man of the East Phrase Origin

The term the sick man of the east derives from a czar Nicholas speech to the British chargé d affaires in St. Petersburg during the Crimean War. He warned of a very sick man who could slip away before needed arrangements. The note cites anecdotes from Mrs Hoyvle and Mrs Doyle about extracting money from odd sources.
