Federal agents described the 20 pound uncut heroin seizure as the largest in US history. Seven people were rounded up on charges of conspiring to import the narcotic. The cache was found at the trailer court home of CWO Herman Condor, a 15 year Army veteran, who was charged with smuggling the narcotic into the country.
Scott County District Court freed Mayor Ray O'Brien and three city officials from indictments charging private use of public property and unmarked city cars. Some cases were continued for one week while others, including Rex Mathews and Carl Martin, remain under indictment. The matter stemmed from alleged illegal trash-collection practices by city trucks, with mentions of the Masonic Temple.
Fort Dodge she widow Julie Haskell Oleson died at 96 leaving an estate of about $2.09 million with a $391,400 set of specific bequests. The balance, more than $1.5 million, goes to Lutheran Hospital. Bequests also go to 17 individuals and organizations including $25,000 to the YMCA and YWCA. Her husband, D M Oleson, a druggist and inventor, died 21 years earlier. Her assets included 24,120 shares of American Home Products stock valued at about $1.59 million. She had lived seven years at Friendship Haven before entering Lutheran Hospital.

A sudden flash of fire in a Yonkers music classroom at a Jewish community center during a holiday song killed twelve people including nine children and three adults. Firefighters battled the blaze as emergency crews evacuated victims from the building in Yonkers, New York.
