In Hazelton Pennsylvania on December 21 more than 150 miners escaped drowning when water flooded an abandoned slope at Audenreid owned by Lehigh Valley and Wilkesbarre Coal. One miner remains unaccounted for and another is dead, as rescuers search for anyone still trapped.
President Roosevelt scolds Gov. Sparks for neglecting peace officer duties at Goldfield Nev and orders federal troops to withdraw by Dec 30 after noting Nevada failed to convene its legislature or form a proper police force. News of the order sparks local reaction among mine owners and residents.

William Garland son of former Attorney General Garland committed suicide in Little Rock Arkansas on December 21 according to local reports. The tragedy occurred in the city as authorities investigated the self-inflicted death.
