Muscatine inventor's Sunny South shoe grows into nationwide industry
Charles C Braunworth of Muscatine turned a mother’s wish for warm, comfortable footwear into a thriving enterprise. From one pair made thirteen years ago the Sunny South shoe now ships to all parts of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, with production rising to about 4,500 pairs this year. The shoe uses sheep shearling for interior warmth and insulation, with a unique hand-built machine set and dies that speed up cutting. Braunworth emphasizes the nonpatented nature of the invention and his belief that money is not everything, dedicating his work to benefiting others.
