Road burner de-slicks Highway 22 76 area in Iowa
A state road burner operated by the Iowa Highway Commission burns off excess oil from asphalt on Highway 22 76 between Muscatine and West Liberty to reduce slipperiness after rain. The machine, the state’s only one of its kind, uses LP gas to reach high temperatures and exposes rock aggregate for traction. Areas near Muscatine below Houser street and the river bottom were targeted, with a broader check of the route planned. State officials and local leaders have urged action over the slick conditions following several accidents and a fatality in early December.
