Muscatine Church History Recounts Growth and Leaders
The Muscatine church legacy traces from 1850 beginnings in homes to a dedicated 1851 brick edifice and later a 1892 building at Sixth and Mulberry. It lists pastors from 1857 to present, notes key figures like Rev. W. J. Beatty and Rev. L. B. Hix, and details the Roman Catholic St Matthias parish development with Rev. J. Laurent and Father Laurent’s long tenure.

St Mary’s Church Emerges From German Catholic Lineage
The St Marys church on West Hill traces its roots to St Matthias and developed from the German American field. In 1875 Father P Laurent bought five acres from G Schultz for 2000 dollars for the German American Beneficial Society. John and George Schaefer bought two acres, with the rest deeded to Bishop John Hennessey of Dubuque. Laurent gained building permission, and parish funds plus subscriptions supported the church project.
