Memory of Oak Grove School’s loghouse and era

The Oak Grove school in south Seventy Six township began in a log building with backless seats and narrow wall desks. In 1859 60 pupils, led by Co Furnas, studied alongside families who later became pioneers. A later frame school replaced the loghouse while memories endure of teachers, marbles games, and civic lyceums.

Beautiful Weed Park Gift and Plans for Muscatine

Lying east of Muscatine along the Mississippi, Weed Park honors Dr and Mrs James Weed whose gift of sixty three acres established the park. The Park Association now manages it with officers including President J M Gobble and Secretary C F Cadle. Ongoing improvements have added flowers and a wardenship, while plans envision a northern driving park, extensions to streetcar service, and new water mains as a sign of another prosperous era for the city.
