Senator Cummins of Iowa urged in the senate that the Payne Aldrich law is too harsh and urged amending bills with separate schedules. Aldrich and Bacon opposed the plan while Lodge supported Cummins and the debate turned to parliamentary procedure.
Decatur Ill Dec 13 Mrs Hannah J Jack aged 89 died. She was an aunt of Mrs William H Taft wife of the president.
Hawkeye Pearl Button Company launches a 100 saw plant in Oskaloosa with about 25 cutters, plans to add workers as needed. The firm operates 100 to 125 saw capacity across Oskaloosa Keokuk and Canton. Wm F Bishop says current business is dull due to overproduction of pearl button blanks and at least 1000 saws idle in key button towns with many men seeking work.
County Auditor A. S. Lawrence certified 1910 city taxes to Mayor W. Hill showing total $107,275.94 to be collected across funds including Consolidated 93,054.04, Water 8,643.62, Sewage 1,074.37, and road funds 3,061.48 686.00. Increase of about 19,000 due to eight mill levy rise, not property valuation.
Passengers arriving in El Paso report Chihuahua fans and officials say fighting erupted between rebels and Diaz’s regulars at Pedernales where skirmishing occurred days earlier. Train passengers said the firing could be heard as the train passed through Pedernales.

Mrs. D. F. Leahy, about 40, collapsed on a downtown street in Clinton Iowa last night. She was helped into a nearby house where she died almost instantly from heart failure.

Ottumwa Iowa December 13 Nancy Miller Lubar of South Ottumwa is celebrating her 100th birthday surrounded by her children grandchildren and great grandchildren. The centenarian appears healthy and joyful at the celebration.
Col. R. P. Howell of the Fifty-fourth Iowa National Guard plans an officers' school at Iowa City in the first week of January. Over fifty officers are expected from twelve Iowa cities to attend the training event.

Mrs. J. A. Cunningham, born 1843 in Newbern Indiana, died Monday from pernicious anemia. Funeral set for 2 pm tomorrow from the Cunningham home, with Rev. A. S. Smith officiating. Survived by husband J. A. Cunningham and children Chas C, Ambrose E, John H, James R, Mrs. Harry Bell, Miss Louise in Washington and Mrs. K. A. Burnell of Minneapolis. The couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last January. The family has lived in Washington county since 1869 and she was highly regarded in the community.
Chicago dispatch reports fifty young women in gym costumes trapped on the roof of a burning building at 311 313 Wabash Avenue. Firefighters pulled them to safety as a Derby Desk and Richardson Carpet factory suffered $100000 in damage. Forty women employed at the rug maker were also rescued. In Rockford two Brantingham children and two servants were saved from a separate residence fire with about $30000 loss.

Washington reports a congress bill by Representative Subway to grant pensions to Civil War and Mexican War veterans. Eligible veterans aged 62 to 75 plus receive monthly pensions from 15 to 40 dollars based on age, starting at filing. Also a memorial to Abraham Lincoln in Washington proposed at 2 million dollars by Senator Cullom.
The Iowa supreme court upheld the wife desertion law but freed the deserting husband Emmet Wyant due to a Clayton district judge’s ruling. Other cases decided include murder sentence for Ben Sloan, disbarment of E P Johnson, and several reversals and affirmations in county and district matters.
Maurice Condon Chickasaw county attorney was suddenly ill Sunday afternoon and rushed to a Chicago hospital. Telegrams from towns along the route reported his condition much worse but he reached Chicago safely. His aged mother is greatly distressed and concerns for both their welfare are noted.

At about 8 this morning a fire roared through the residence of George Behres on West Hill. Firefighter neighbors saved adjacent property and furniture before the house was lost. Frank Curry, who entered the kitchen, escaped a gasoline explosion with burns to his hands and singed hair. The cause remains undetermined and the loss total is not known.
Chicago December 13. Mrs Aileen Christopher the government's star witness was sentenced to thirty days in jail for contempt for refusing to produce information before the federal grand jury. Her attorney John A Brown received seventy days for the same reason. New evidence appeared as two checks were delivered to the court through Mrs Anna Roth.
Des Moines reports say Frank Gotch and J. L. Blake will recover their watches but lose the money from a St Paul to Des Moines sleeper theft. Police arrested C. O. Elliott after thefts occurred during the night as a Pullman porter was away, with some items found in a local pawn shop.
