Muscatine to close lock 16 for winter repairs
Mississippi river lock 16 near Muscatine will close to navigation Monday December 12 for repairs expected to last 90 days. The Rock Island district corps of engineers will dewater the lock and remove gates using the Hercules derrick boat, allowing sand blasting repainting and new fender timbers.

Manhole Explosions Shoot Covers High In Indiana
In Indianapolis a string of blasts sent 32 underground explosions and manhole covers 40 to 50 feet into the air. About 50 covers were launched as gasoline leaked from a service station tank. Evacuation of residents within a 21 block radius lasted four hours.
