Men Fleece Hoax Separates Muscatine Workers From Pay
About two dozen Muscatine men fell for a job hoax when a stranger posed Saturday as an advance employment agent for a construction firm to lay a gas line. He hired men, arranged board and room for about 40, and collected cash for licenses and insurance, promising repayment from first week’s wages. The suspect wore a red checkered sweater, khaki breeches and leather boots and had not been located.

In Spirit Lake authorities planned an inquest into the deaths of Charles Johnson and his son Donald of Kearney Nebraska. They were killed in a shooting at C. W. Barton’s home with Barton wounded.
