Paris AP reports President Charles de Gaulle drew a stinging rebuff in the first presidential vote with 84.9 percent turnout and 43.96 percent for De Gaulle, forcing a runoff with Francois Mitterrand on December 19. Gaullist officials differed on participation while others called him a fighter unlikely to quit. He showed strength in some departments but fell short of 50 percent nationwide.
