Review of Discount Hike Looms
Washington Reuters. Chairman Henry S. Reuss of the House international finance subcommittee promised a congressional review of recent British and American discount rate increases. He argued the monetary system should shift away from the dollar and pound as the sole international payment anchors and urged action to avoid domestic harm. Reuss said the urgent need for change is clear amid a worsening balance of payments and recent rate moves by Britain and the U S Federal Reserve System. He questioned the necessity of the Fed action seen as excessive dollar drains.
