Secretary Dulles spoke of reliable reports that Russia has offered arms to Middle East nations. He stressed there is no official confirmation and named no country. He noted the reports circulate in diplomatic circles and cautioned such offers would not ease world tensions.
Former Field Marshal Albert Kesselring told U S News that Hitler could have invaded Britain but did not want to crush the British navy or empire. He said Hitler admired Britain and hoped for peace, faulting Churchill and outlining perceived German strategic errors in World War II.

New York reports the nation's two largest independent roasters General Foods and Standard Brands raised wholesale prices today. Maxwell House and Chase & Sanborn each rose three cents per pound to 91 cents. Sources anticipate further rises from other roasters. Retail pass-through depends on individual grocers amid higher green coffee costs.
Rita Hayworth has separated from crooner Dick Haymes citing the best interests of their children. Haymes says he loves her and awaits her return. photographers were kept from seeing Hayworth as she left with her daughters. Haymes recently returned from a singing engagement to find them gone after a prior argument.

In Goldfield Nevada a man Henry Hutts 55 died after a wreck that killed his wife Alice 50 from Roseburg Oregon. The couple were in a pickup that flipped four times and landed in a drainage ditch nineteen miles north of Tonopah. Hutts then shot himself in the forehead with a .22 pistol after seeing his wife die.
J. Cooper of Waterloo a son of Dr. and Mrs. Clark N. Cooper died after a 60 foot fall on Traunstein Mountain in the Austrian Alps. His roommate Dennis Melchert reported the accident as they summered at the University of Castle Traunsee near Gmunden. Cooper had planned to return to Iowa State in September for his sophomore year.
In wooded terrain south of Dover Plains New York a small plane crash killed five people including three children. Victims’ names were not immediately released. The report notes a deadly series of transportation incidents across the region.
