Woman Drives Fire Engine in Tioga County
Pauline Marth, a housewife and mother, is Tioga County's only certified woman fire truck driver. Since 1933 she has been an active member of Elmira Lowdsy Telegrim Daggell’s Big Elm Fire Department, piloting the department's only pumper and logging 40 hours a week at times. Chief Jol Voorhees calls her as capable as any operator and notes her husband Gordon, department president, trained her on the truck’s equipment. Cheryl Martins, age 40, hopes to drive trucks in the future, while Pauline continues to balance chores with fire company duties and enjoys the challenge despite curious reactions from some.
