Ground near the Pittsburg and Lake Erie cut in Port Vue threatens a landslide endangering 25 dwellings. With houses creaking and chimneys sinking, several hundred foreigners flee as the slope remains unstable after a rail cut exposes soft shale and soapstone beneath homes.
In St Louis Mrs Jennie Farrell and her daughters Mamie and Jennie were arrested after noon on charges of robbing department stores. For five years they used agents keys to vacant houses to seize costly dress goods left at the door c o d. The women kept the messenger waiting, entered the empty houses, then returned bundles claiming dissatisfaction before the firms discovered missing valuables.
Five hundred residents of the west side school district held a mass meeting to oppose mandatory vaccination for pupils before the fall term. Dr. C. W. Geyer, Aurora health officer, issued the proclamation for both East and West side boards due to summer smallpox. The East board complied. the West side defies and the doctor vows enforcement.
In Des Moines Iowa on August 29 engineers John and Walter Smith discovered their missing brother George dead on a footpath four blocks north of the Fifth Street bridge at 7 p.m. An empty chloroform bottle was on him and the death was due to an excessive dose of the drug. George left home Sunday morning and did not return for dinner.
In Wheeling West Virginia on August 28 Mc Kinley Nettles an 11 year old shot Cecil Stanley also 11 during a dispute over marksmanship while target shooting in the woods. Stanley was dragged into bushes and left. A search party found him and Nettles later confessed to the murder after being jailed.
Comptroller Plant of the Southern railway warned in Washington that state railway legislation could endanger railroad and public prosperity. He said a panic from lower passenger rates would place burden on North Carolina as well.
Iowa City, Aug 29. Alderman Charles Schmidt accused of trying to defraud the heirs of Henry Biebesheimer by presenting a woman as the decedent’s widow at his Chicago burial. Investigators found no marriage. since no money or property changed hands, heirs will not prosecute.
Secretary Taft landed in Denver at 6 30 PM to a eager crowd. A noon reception at the Republican club drew many Democrats to shake his hand. He is to speak this afternoon at the Capitol grounds.
A large blaze in Hakodate last Monday razed 15,000 houses and most public buildings. Three hundred people are reported dead, with damage estimated at 15 million dollars. The American consulate survives among foreign posts.

Harahan retorted calling Fish a liar, and the altercation ended with members separating the two.
In St Petersburg the court martial trying 18 accused of plotting against Emperor Nicholas and the government last May sentenced three to death by hanging and nine to terms of imprisonment. Six were acquitted.

McKinney Richmond a 10 year old Black boy was found guilty of first degree murder for shooting his younger sister with a rifle last May at Clarion near Oil City Pa. The court spared the death penalty due to his age and ordered indefinite commitment to Morganza reform school.
Davenport Iowa August 29 special. Lightning struck the home of Clark Shannon city electrician causing roof damage but no injuries were reported.
Paris dispatch reports Vice Admiral Phili bert that Moors from Casablanca attacked the camp at Casa blanca yesterday but were vigorously repulsed with no reported losses.
Winona Minnesota reports William Larchwood enraged by a boy's refusal to work hurls plaster trowel into six year old John Schultz’s face. The attack destroys the boy’s eyes and burns the flesh badly during a summer day labor dispute.
In Kouts Indiana 400 enraged farmers blocked roads with shotguns pitchforks and revolvers surrounding two men suspected of killing Lizzie Schroeder ten in Gary Indiana last Monday The men were taken to Crown Point questioned and later cleared as investigators found no link to the crime One had worked in Chicago and the other in Morris Illinois prior to their arrest
A heavy Des Moines wind storm at the Iowa state fair grounds caused major damage. The Knabenshue airship and captive balloon were blown into a live wire and burned, destroying the airship exhibit worth over 50 000 dollars. The International Harvester display and several tents were ruined with many women and children harmed.
John Laux a nonunion Postal operator in Waukegan fled for his life when a mob of striking telegraph operators attacked the office. The building closed after the incident and Laux hid under a barn as strikers searched the town.
Helen Gould, Mrs. Clarence H. Mackey, and Mrs. J. G. Phielps Stokes, leading women stockholders in Western Union and Postal Telegraph, held a secret conference on the strike and took action toward settlement. Miss Gould cabled to her brother George J. in Europe to return at once after the meeting.
In Dublin Indiana on August 29 Voris Dickson 16 shot and killed his brother James 18 while playing Wild West. The pistol was loaded but the brothers did not know it, and Voris commanded his brother to hold up his hands before firing.
George N. Arthur a piano tuner aged 47 died after shooting himself in Terre Haute Indiana. He had endured months of pain from injuries suffered during an X ray examination to locate a wire in his finger.
