Lon Chaney dies in Los Angeles this morning after a long battle with anaemia and bronchial congestion. The famed silent film actor known as the Man of a Thousand Faces faced a fatal struggle as authorities reported a mystery explosion near a grain elevator arena is involved in the incident.
An explosion at the W. P. Devereaux elevator operated by E. F. Carlston in Minneapolis killed two workers, Philip Olsen aged 32 and Harold Barnett aged 25, as fire damaged the structure and nearby homes. Cause suspected as spontaneous combustion or a small fire in machinery. Families watched as firemen fought the flames and rescued other workers.

Los Angeles August 26 AP Lon Chaney famed for his thousand faces died early today after a battle with anaemia and lung congestion. He was 47 and had entered hospital August 15 for pneumonia related anaemia. He survived three transfusions but a lung hemorrhage proved fatal within half an hour. Chaney known as a mystery man in Hollywood, rose from stage work to film stardom. He was born April 1 1883 in Colorado Springs to deaf and dumb parents and left school early to pursue theater. He leaves wife and son Creighton Chaney.
A 17 year old John Eichhorn of Malcolm Iowa was judged healthiest farm boy by a panel led by Dr Daniel V Glomset and John S Quist. He scored 97 7 with 32 county entrants and rival Major Anderson of Bronson scoring 97 5.

Evanston Illinois August 26 The city exonerates Police Chief William O Freeman from blame over borrowing 300 dollars from Jack Zuta the slain Chicago vice lord. A letter in Zuta's boxes showed the loan and Freeman said he repaid it to retire a house judgment.
In Waterloo Iowa today Harry Nichols seven months old died from burns inflicted by a fire sparked last night by a gasoline stove explosion in his parents home. The parents Edward and Mrs Nichols were in the kitchen as flames cut off the front room where the child slept. Firemen rescued the infant. Mrs Nichols is hospitalized with burns. her husband sustained only minor injuries.
Ten year old Betty Jane Foster was found unharmed near Elk Horn Wisconsin after a two day kidnapping. Claude Dillner twenty seven was jailed after an automobile chase ending a multi state search with hundreds involved. Dillner admitted the act saying he "fell in love" and authorities said kidnapping charges were likely. Betty Jane said she was not molested and was treated well during captivity.
Bankers from drouth strike states met at the White House with President Hoover to outline local credit schemes through intermediate credit banks. Henry M. Robinson of Los Angeles leads coordination for relief funds and county units, with Hyde stressing county relief as essential to ground-level aid.
In Chicago three hours after a raid on an alleged disorderly house Nels M Wedberg ward politician was shot and seriously wounded by Policeman Alvis Meyers a raiding officer. Meyers said Wedberg attacked him outside the East Side station and he fired in self defense. Wedberg a real estate expert for the board of local improvements claimed the officer beat him with his gun as he exited. The bullet struck Wedbergs chest and his condition was listed as serious.
In Carroll County Iowa, two men died in apparent suicides within four hours. Evan E. Dillavoy, 63, of Glidden, was found hanging at his home, and George Bayer, 40, of Dedham, was found in a corncrib on his farm. Dillavoy survived by a widow and eight children, Bayer by a widow and four children.
Alexander Legge of the Federal Farm Board says drought fears are overstated in the upper Mississippi and Missouri valleys. He cites Iowa Nebraska northern Kansas northwest Missouri eastern Dakotas Minnesota Wisconsin Illinois Michigan Ohio Indiana as likely to see farm incomes at or above 1929 levels, and warns misinterpretation harms farmers. He met with Iowa county agents and Farm Bureau leaders to discuss the issue.
Cincinnati Aug 26 AP The Grand Army of the Republic defers action on a 32000 permanent fund distribution for another year as Civil War veterans thin out. Debate includes using funds to pay grants for Grants tomb restoration in New York City. Attendance tops 15,000 with about 1500 veterans expected at the parade.
Berlin Illinois August 26 AP Bob Rozie and Prince three of William Allens fox terriers were rescued last night from an underground drain tile where they had been confined for five days The dogs entered the tile while chasing a rabbit and became wedged The two smaller dogs Sport and Queenie escaped after 24 hours but the others remained Allen dug five foot holes to reach the tile yesterday finding them ten and a half miles from the entry which was five feet deep They were weak from hunger and thirst but all recovered
In Calcutta suburb Jorabajan, a police station was bombed this evening. Two persons were injured.
