Poor Melon Crop Hurts Muscatine Island and Cone Areas
Excessive wet and cool weather has produced the poorest melon crop in years on Muscatine Island and near Cone. Shipped lots are few with only 5 to 6 carloads possible from the island and none from Cone yet. Local melons arrive in good condition for the market, but Chicago demand and other buyers will be short. Growers fear reduced profits though some remain hopeful frost-free September end could help.
