Poland mobilized nearly 1,000,000 men with more reservists called after government conferences. Prime Minister Skladkowski cancelled official leave and schools delayed opening. Warsaw remained calm as border incidents, including a German attack near Makosłowa, were reported.
Local No. 1 of the Packinghouse Workers organizing committee led a walkout at John Morrell & Co. in Ottumwa. By 10 a.m. workers were leaving and a picket line formed as trucks for a new building were turned away. The CIO union pressed for a closed shop, check off, and an eight hour day with overtime pay. Morrell held firm. About 2,600 workers are employed at the Ottumwa plant.
Pope Pius XII at Castel Gandolfo issues a new appeal for peace urging governments and peoples to renew negotiations to avert war. He warns that empires not built on justice are not blessed by God, stressing late but possible talks for mutual understanding.
German trucks were reported near Jupen as fortifications along the Belgian frontier were occupied during the night. Artillery was drawn into place while King Leopold urged open negotiations, hoping other leaders would respond to a peace appeal from seven small nations.
Mrs. Sarah Delano Roosevelt, mother of the president, left her sister's Paris apartment for Le Havre and the New York bound liner Washington, heading home. The dignitary departure follows calm, routine steps as she sails from France to the United States.

U S observers warn there is tension between Italy and Germany over the Danzig situation. A film expert notes it will take years and many good pictures to build stars acceptable in Honolulu and Hawaii cities.
Berlin AP reports German troops stood ready to back Hitler s demands on Poland. Britain warns its consuls to urge British nationals to leave Germany while the United States embassy advises Americans to depart. A foreign office official calls for Polish Foreign Minister Beck to meet Hitler soon.
Danzig senate named Al bert Forster as chief of state, replacing Arthur Greiser who had led the Free City. Poland reportedly closed the border and cut telephone links with Gdynia as tensions rose amid German demands and a Russian German non aggression pact. Berlin prepared a potential ultimatum to Poland as Goebbels and Hitler awaited updates from Ribbentrop.
Exiled former Bolivian president Col. David Toro said he would return to La Paz if summoned to help form a government to replace the late Col. German Busch. Busch died of a self-inflicted gunshot at his residence, Bolivian officials said, following a failed counter revolution Toro led in 1938.
Double funeral rites for Rose Marlette Brown a 15 year old mother and her infant daughter were planned in Wapello. Mrs Brown died at home at 3 p m Wednesday after giving birth. Surviving are her husband parents two sisters and two brothers. Services expected Saturday under Jamison and Dudgeon funeral home.
Partly cloudy tonight and Friday with slightly warmer conditions in eastern Iowa and nearby areas. Mississippi River stages show small changes with Hastings 4.6 rising 0.2 and Dubuque 7.3 falling 0.8. other gauges report minor shifts.
British and French military missions reportedly decide to leave Moscow Friday ending talks on a three power mutual aid pact with Soviet Russia. Von Ribbentrop reported to Hitler after sealing the non aggression accord with Russia.
Ed V Fisher 52 a Wapello farmer died at 6 p m in Burlington hospital from a skull fracture and other injuries after a Tuesday night crash at a road junction near West Wapello. His daughter Hazel was injured but stable. Surviving are Alfred W Max H Gene Faris Meritt Korf and Hazel. Bur ial planned at Wapello cemetery with services pending.
Premier Chamberlain told the House of Commons that Hitler demanded a free hand for Germany in eastern Europe and warned Britain that interference would trigger war. He urged an emergency powers bill while reaffirming Britain's Poland obligations amid rapid European armament. Kennedy urged Americans abroad to return home as France mobilized reservists and Poland strengthened defenses. Europe braces for possible conflict.
The Hygeia health magazine reports that over 8,000,000 injections of a new anesthetic have proven a definite improvement in reducing dental pain. Dr. Fred R. Adams notes occasional psychic fear and imagined suffering persist. The chemical name is Para-amino mono-osobutyl benzoate hydrochloride.

Berlin prints the text of the German Soviet non aggression pact. The two powers pledge to refrain from force and to support each other against third party aggression. They will consult on common interests and avoid aligning with opposing groups. The treaty lasts ten years and auto renews for five if no abrogation is declared. Ratification occurs promptly in Berlin.
The Bank of England increased its rediscount rate from two to four percent today amid European tension. It is the first rate change since June 30, 1932, and follows discussions by the London Stock Exchange committee and chair Robert Pearson on minimum gilt edge prices.
