A C-119 Flying Boxcar of the 456th Troop Carrier Wing crashed in the Liberty Park neighborhood near Charleston Air Force Base during a routine night flight. Nine or more airmen and civilians were killed, with five crew members confirmed dead and six survivors not seriously injured.
Erie Pennsylvania reports 78 year old skipper Harvey Hecker drowns when the 16 foot honeymoon cruiser The Little Lady capsizes in Lake Erie amid a storm. Hecker’s wife, 70, aboard with him, is rescued after three hours in water. neighbor Herbert Durst saves her and she is in fair condition. The couple married May 21 in New Port Richey Florida and had traveled far since then. Hecker, a retired civil engineer, built the boat in 1952 and once sailed 4,000 miles for about $100.
Muscatine mayor Elmo Ferguson refuses to sign a council resolution banning political activity by city employees. He says it violates the US Constitution and free speech. The measure would bar employees from supporting candidates and could lead to dismissal. A veto could be overridden by five votes. a council meeting may be called to reconsider.
Dr. Ralph Heeren director of the State Health Dept division of preventable disease says polio cases in Iowa have climbed to 70 in the past week, the year's high so far, and the peak of the polio season should come within about a week.

Greece and the Soviet Union sign a 17 month trade and payments pact, exchanging 10 million dollars worth of goods each way, tobacco for machinery fuels and coal.
