Harvesting potatoes and squash guidance for storage and picking

Iowa State extension horticulturist Ben Vance advises handling potatoes gently to avoid bruises that cause decay. After harvest, keep tubers out of sun to prevent greening and cure for 10 days to two weeks before storage at about 38 degrees. Summer squash should be picked young to maximize yield, as delaying harvest reduces flower and fruit production. Cucumbers also require regular picking to sustain high yields, with mature fruit production dropping if left to ripen.

Varying Results Reported In Herbicide Applications

ISU Iowa State University researchers report varying herbicide effectiveness across Iowa plots. Some sites near Eldora showed excellent weed control in corn and soybeans, while a Kanawha field day speaker warned that chemical control is not universal. Weather, soil moisture, and timing influence post and preemergence results, with chemistry best used to supplement cultural weed control rather than as a sole method.

July 1 stocks totaled 284.5 million bushels with 165 million in loan/CCC/retail channels. exports and carryover projections suggest a crop near one billion bushels if yields average. Late July prices in Central Iowa stood around $2.53 a bushel.
