The nationwide wire strike paralyzes operations as 2000 postal and Western Union workers walk out. Chicago and other large offices report short staffing though New York and Minneapolis strikes are unconfirmed by AP. Local Iowa offices appear unaffected at press time.
In New Orleans the strike by Postal Telegraphers broadens as the day force fails to report. About sixty workers are affected and Western Union expects to avoid a walkout by its 100 operators. A union meeting was called to discuss the situation. Gotham Operation Ready reports New York telegraphers struggle to cover business amid talks of a strike. Officials say preparations are under way to handle traffic and aim to break the strike quickly if it occurs. The local union president disputes reports of no funds and says a long strike could be financed.
Chicago and many Western Union and Postal Telegraph offices across the region strike. About 1,700 in Chicago and 1,269 Western Union workers statewide join, halting commercial and personal telegraph messages and disrupting branches. Other cities report widespread walkouts with unions seeking eight hour days and higher wages.
The nation faces a widespread strike as Western Union operators quit work in cities including Kansas City El Paso Salt Lake City Colorado Springs Denver Helena Dallas Fort Worth New Orleans Minneapolis and New York hosts a mass meeting to discuss actions with many workers out and managers remaining.
Western New York federal grand jury returns ten indictments against Standard Oil of New York Vacuum Oil and joint and separate actions against New York Central and Pennsylvania railways. Standard Oil plans appeal while bond and financial questions delay supersedeas. Attorney General Bonaparte and the President discuss the cases at Oyster Bay. Stock prices tumble as a $29 240 000 fine looms.
A fire at the Colorado and Southern freight depot in Boulder, Colorado, believed incendiary, led to a massive explosion of four tons of dynamite on flat cars. The blast injured 50 to 100 people, with many feared dead, as stones and bricks flew and windows shattered across town. Names of injured include Roy H. Leffadre Ike O. Wilson Edward Cook and others, mostly Boulder residents.
F H McGuigan resigns as Great Northern first vice president after a physical culture interview with James J Hill. He will visit the office briefly tomorrow and then leave for good.
Sioux City August 19 A crowd of over eight thousand gathered at Woodlawn Park for Sioux City's first automobile meet. Sixteen entries compete in the principal race as Barney Oldfield and Ollie Savani duel in the Red Devil and Green Dragon machines. Savani sped a trial mile in 1 minute 17 seconds.
The funeral for Joseph Fessler of East Sixth Street was held at 9 a.m. at St. Matthias Catholic Church. Members of Shelby Norman Post and Champion Hose Company attended in body, escorting the remains to St. Mary's Cemetery. Father F J Leonard led the Requiem High Mass and delivered a sermon praising Fessler’s Civil War service and civic service with the hose companies.

Prince Borghese arrives in Meaux from Liege to be greeted by local automobilists on the route to Paris. He received a hearty reception at Reims and other towns and is due in Paris tomorrow.
The Nashville Banner doubts a report that Bill Quantrell, Civil War guerrilla leader, died in a Louisville hospital after capture. Frank James, former outlaw and Quantrell band member, tells M B Morton the tale conflicts with the Banner account and the Vancouver Island living status.
Des Moines Iowa August 10 Special Lincoln and the Brown army staged a strong retreat watched by an artillery guarded line. Blues by flank movements gained edge while a cavalry engagement looms. Several prisoners taken and much of the Blues wagon train nearly uncaptured. Real bullets caused a hat wound to Corporal Moravill. Captain Castle turned over the incident for inspection. Blue forces accuse Wade of a breach of discipline.
Father Leonard praised Mr. Fessler for his help to soldiers and firemen as G A R Post led funeral rites from the church to St Marys Cemetery. The interment followed a farewell prayer and pallbearers from local posts and companies.
Consul Dungning reports Italian makers shift toward Mississippi shells for buttons. Italian factories face Bohemian competition and costly machinery, while a Milan firm plans a Mississippi shell button plant with English equipment and Austrian experts. Returns may be slow but long term gains look promising.
