Outlook for Cattle Feeding Appears Risky and Profitable

An Iowa State economist projected fall markets for heavy steers and heifer calves, noting high risk but potential profit. Prices at river markets in August showed steers 50 to 500 pounds around 24 dollars per cwt, with bids influenced by corn at about 1.10 a bushel. Heavier cattle costs could reach 21 cents per pound to 24 dollars per head, with additional expenses of interest, veterinary care, and fees. The calf crop in 1963 is slightly up, suggesting adequate supply. however, corn prices may drive feeder bids up, potentially reducing margins if prices rise too much.
