Old Man of Fruitland Killed by City Rail Engine
John Stewart an 85 year old Fruitland resident was struck and killed this morning at about 7 30 by engine No 2 of the M N and S railway near Baker avenue in South Muscatine while walking on the tracks. The driver Frank Petty was bringing the engine up town and two loaded box cars were pushed ahead. A witness signaled to slow and stop but the man on the head end failed to warn Stewart in time. He was dragged about 100 feet and the body laid beside the track. Stewart traveled from New York 25 years ago and lived a retired life, dealing in real estate and money lending. He left no definite family. He was said to be a peculiar, miserly man with rumors of hidden wealth and several houses in Fruitland. He had been married three times and had unclear if he left children. He was a veteran surveyor who helped map western states and Iowa when a territory. An eyewitness Mrs. John Martin described the moment and the engineer Frank Petty confirmed the slow approach and late stop after signaling by the head-end worker and the bell ringing. He said the engine halted after the two loaded cars passed over Stewart. The body was removed and the engine returned to the city.
