Highway Commission Plans Bridge Hearing in Muscatine
The Iowa Highway Commission will hold a public hearing at 3 p.m. September 4 in Muscatine city council chambers on demolishing the old Mississippi River bridge and building a new Cypress Street bridge. Norbert Beckey, Muscatine Bridge Commission chair, announced the plan at the Wednesday meeting. Permits will be sought from the Coast Guard and Iowa Natural Resources Commission. Land acquisition and right of way will be discussed, with interested parties invited to speak. Estimated total cost is 4.47 million dollars. Plans are by consulting engineers for the Muscatine Commission as the 1967 law allows revenue bonds for Interstate bridge construction. A friendly court suit tests the act’s constitutionality. The personnel committee will review a job summary by bridge manager Jack McConnaha, with salary recommendations due September 18.
